One of the great simple pleasures of late summer is watching hydrangea blooms start to “antique” on their bushes. The whites get creamier, shades of pink and burgundy emerge, and the classic blue bushes take on shades of mauve and lilac that you’d never see on fresh blooms.
Highly sought after (and stunning!) for wedding work, Antique Hydrangeas aren’t a special variety or color on their own. They’re simply what hydrangea blooms do naturally when left to mature on their stems.
Uniquely beautiful in that they can’t be rushed, the multi-colored blooms can only be achieved through patience and careful timing.
If you grow hydrangeas, be sure to keep your snips handy and watch for the small window when they show these unique colors. Just a few stems in a vase make for a beautiful display.
They’re a wonderful reminder that good things often take time and that, sometimes, the most beautiful things only come with age! 💛
