Finished up these two on Saturday after a long in-progress wait. Started them a few months ago. I’ve been working on a big, unrelated project that’s been keeping me from the shop. Felt like getting in a little shop time this weekend. The pencil is buckeye and the keychain is black and white ebony.

I was able to crank out 5 snowman bottle stoppers yesterday. Not a bad day!

Checked on the first poplar bowl that I rough turned about two months ago. It’s still over 20% moisture! No cracks yet so that’s good. Back in the bag for now. Once it drops below 15% I’ll finish it by turning it again, and then we can see the final product. May be another month.

This is the poplar bowl I roughed out yesterday. It’s stuffed away in a bag with some shavings to slowly dry out. Hoping it doesn’t crack! Will find out in a month or so.

Thanks to some awesome in-laws, I acquired a bunch of poplar logs this weekend. Decided to see what was inside this evening. Made a mess and rough turned a bowl. Since the wood is still wet (freshly cut trees can be about 50% moisture), I put it in a bag with the shavings to slowly dry it out. Hopefully it doesn’t crack. We’ll see in a month or two...the log I used for the bowl is the white-ish one up front.

I have a love-hate relationship with snakewood, like the below pen. I really like the patterns and how it does indeed look like a snake. However, it cracks easily when drilling, overheats easily which can lead to cracking, is pretty expensive, and tends to break off chunks if the tool isn’t sharp enough. But, man it’s pretty!
