Twenty-two-year-old Oriah Pera feels like she's stuck waiting for her life to begin. Between managing her health conditions and her overprotective mother, she struggles to find her independence. But when her mother's job takes them to Majorca, Ry know this summer will be the start of her new life.

In her first small act of rebellion, she heads off to the beach alone—and meets an infuriatingly charming Spaniard. Julian makes Ry feel even more naive and inexperienced than she normally does, but she can't help her growing attraction to him.

As the summer continues, Julian pulls Ry out of her shell and into the adventure she's always craved. But with her return to America looming, Ry must decide if she's brave enough to follow her heart and seek out the life she wants for herself. Due to be released on Prime Video Aug 26.

Serving as a warning and a guide for humanity, the best science fiction books entertain their readers while encouraging them to speculate on humanity's future. Whether they are exploring galaxies or focusing on down-to-earth stories, the best sci-fi novels of the 21st century offer critical societal and scientific evaluations of contemporary life through nuanced, character-driven storytelling.

Some of the best science fiction books of the last 10 years ! (Including Dungeon Crawler Carl!😂)

10 The Collapsing Empire John Scalzi 🌌
Written by acclaimed science fiction and space opera writer John Scalzi in 2017, The Collapsing Empire is a witty, action-packed space opera set in The Interdependency — a vast human empire connected by a network of "streams", called "The Flow", allowing faster-than-light travel across 48 star systems. The first book in a completed trilogy, it follows three key POV characters who uncover the truth about The Flow's impending collapse and must battle political rivals to save a doomed civilization.

9 Sunrise on the Reaping Suzanne Collins🏹
Set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins' latest addition to this beloved YA dystopian series is the 2025 prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. It follows sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he enters the 50th Hunger Games and the Second Quarter Quell. With an adaptation set for a November release, the novel chronicles Haymitch's journey from life in District 12 to the traumatic victory that ultimately shaped his life and his role as a mentor to Katniss and Peeta decades later.

8 Dungeon Crawler Carl Matt Dinaman 👾
Originally self-published in 2020, Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl is a science fantasy LitRPG book and webcomic series with its eighth novel published in May 2026. It follows Coast Guard veteran Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, enduring the sudden destruction of all man-made structures on Earth by the interstellar corporation Borant. Intending to mine Earth's resources, the aliens offer survivors a chance to reclaim their planet by entering a brutal 18-level dungeon, where they must battle, level up, and build a galactic audience. This hilarious fast-paced adventure perfectly blends slapstick humor, explosive action, and dark dystopian stakes.

7 All Systems Red Martha Wells🤖
First in Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, a popular sci-fi book series, All Systems Red is a 2017 novella that follows a self-aware and socially anxious security cyborg designed to protect humans on a research mission. After overriding its "governor module", the cyborg, which nicknames itself "Murderbot", has developed independence, and while they just want to watch soap operas all day, they are constantly forced to save its human clients. Struggling with anxiety and awkwardness in social situations, Murderbot's snarky, introverted internal monologue is deeply relatable

6 Project Hail Mary Andy Weir🧑‍🚀
Recently adapted into the blockbuster box-office hit considered to be the best sci-fi movie of the decade, Project Hail Mary is the 2021 hard science fiction novel by Andy Weir. The ultimate "competence p**n", the novel follows Ryland Grace as he wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there or why, and his eventual discovery of his one-way mission to save Earth from a solar-eating microbe that's destroying the sun.

5 This Is How You Lose the Time War Gladstone 🕦
Written by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, This Is How You Lose the Time War is a 2019 science fiction epistolary novel with a q***r love story that defies time itself. It follows two enemy agents, Red and Blue, traveling back and forth in time to alter history on behalf of their warring empires while sabotaging each other's work. With beautifully lyrical prose, the novel is written through clandestine correspondences between the rival time travel agents that test the limits of their loyalty. Showcasing brilliant co-author dynamics, with Gladstone writing for Red and El-Mohtar for Blue, this distinct division gives each agent a unique and recognizable voice.

4 A Memory Called Empire Arkady Martine🌠
Arkady Martine's Hugo Award-winning debut novel, A Memory Called Empire, is the first in the political space opera duology, the Teixcalaan Series. It follows Mahit Dzmare, ambassador to the sprawling Teixcalaanli Empire, who is tasked with investigating her predecessor's mysterious death while navigating deadly imperial court politics and preventing the Empire from annexing the small mining outpost she calls home. Celebrated for its cerebral, character-driven approach to space opera, the series explores the psychology of imperialism, the weight of history, and how language shapes thought, power, and perception.

3 We Are Legion (We Are Bob) Dennis Taylor🧠
We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is the first installment in Dennis E. Taylor's hard science fiction series that follows software engineer and sci-fi fan Bob Johansson, who wakes up 117 years in the future after ironically and tragically passing when he signs up to have his brain preserved after death. As a "corpsicle" with no rights, Bob is now property of the state and is uploaded into a deep-space probe sent out to find a new home for an endangered and war-torn humanity. Exploring the universe and encountering alien lifeforms, the protagonist creates copies of his mind and deploys these "Bobs" across the galaxy.

2 Sea of Tranquility Emily St John Mandel 🌕
From Emily St. John Mandel, the author of the dystopian novel Station Eleven that's now adapted into a flawless HBO miniseries, Sea of Tranquility is a metaphysical time travel novel published in 2022. Following time-traveling detective Gaspery-Jacques Roberts as he is tasked with investigating a space-time anomaly, the narrative spans centuries from 1912 British Columbia to a moon colony in 2401, connecting multiple characters who all witness the same strange anomaly. Written during COVID-19, the novel details Mandel's own experiences of the pandemic through the eyes of novelist Olive Llewellyn, who writes about a fictional influenza pandemic while unaware of real-world viral outbreaks on Earth in 2203.

1 Dark Matter Blake Crouch🌑
Adapted by Apple TV in 2024, Dark Matter is Blake Crouch's 2016 sci-fi countdown thriller that follows a physics professor who is abducted and sent to an alternate reality in which his life was dramatically altered when he decided not to marry his wife and instead chose to pursue his career as a physicist. Drawing on the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, the novel's thought-provoking science explores identity, the consequences of choices, the nature of reality, and the power of love through the emotional "what ifs" that linger in everyone's everyday lives.

Counting the days to fall ? Can't wait until cooler weather comes?
These books have all the fall vibes! 🍂

Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz

A slowburn but captivating story set in early 19th century Edinburgh about a young lady determined to become a surgeon. But, to pass the medical examination, she needs all the practice she can get, which is why a chance acquaintance with a young resurrection man suddenly seems like a chance of her lifetime.
Read it if you are interested in gothic-y settings, gory, chilling details, grave robbers, fantasy twists and people determined to become more than what they’re told they could be. Just keep in mind that this is more a love story than a romance (yes, there’s a difference).

2. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

This book people either love or hate. But for me, it’s one of the best fall books out there – fairytale-inspired, whimsical and magical. With a bit of angsty romance as well, and a truly… unique antagonist. Agnieszka lives in a picturesque little valley set on the edge of a magical forest. The villagers are constantly under threat by the corrupted Wood, and their only hope and protection comes from a powerful wizard called the Dragon. But in return, every ten years, the Dragon takes a young girl from the valley to serve him in his tower.

3. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

One of 2021 favorites, a book that was by no means perfect, yet the story captivated me and I can’t wait for book #2, Hell Bent, to be published. Ninth House is a mix of dark academia, a ghost story and a murder mystery – if that sounds good to you, make sure to check it out.
Alex Stern can see ghosts, which got her a ticket to Yale. There, she is expected to supervise rituals secret societies perform, as these rituals attract the dead. But, with her mentor Darlington missing and a girl’s body being found on the campus, Alex might be in over her head trying to figure out what really is going on.

4. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

A bit of a young adult murder mystery, a bit of dark academia. Quirky main character. Gothic exclusive boarding school. Atmospheric read and a promise of much more to come. Just a few reasons to check out the Truly Devious series.
In 1936, the wife and daughter of the founder of Ellingham Academy had been kidnapped and the only clue as to what happened to them was a mocking riddle song signed with ‘Truly, Devious’. In the present day, we follow Stevie, a girl obsessed with unsolved murder cases. Stevie is c5nvinced she could solve the Truly Devious mystery… But then a new tragedy strikes the academy.

5. The Girl in White by Lindsay Currie

May I interest you in a middle-grade ghost story set in a small town where it’s Halloween all year round? Perfect if you want atmospheric narration, haunted town setting and some chills, without it being too scary. The story follows twelve-year-old Mallory, who lives in Eastport, a place famous for its legends of ghosts, curses and haunted places. Though most of the stories are just that – stories, there seems to be a vengeful ghost wandering around, and she’s determined to get Mallory’s attention.

6. Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane

Autumn is a perfect time for all kinds of thrillers and murder mysteries. I chose this one because it has a perfect fall setting – an idyllic college town in central New York State around the end of September. Not exactly cozy, not exactly school setting, but still a bit of both.
Lila Ridgefield has just found out something horrible about her husband. She decides to take matters into her own hands, but everything goes horribly wrong. Not only does her husband’s body go missing, but now someone is sending her suggestive, sinister notes. And her carefully constructed plan is completely falling apart.

7. The Retreat by Mark Edwards

If you are in the mood for a mystery that borders with horror and may or may not be paranormal, definitely check out The Retreat. It follows Lucas, a horror novelist, who goes to a little writer’s retreat set in Wales to work on his latest book.
The whole place seems unsettling – the owner’s daughter has gone missing two years ago, a lot of people act suspiciously and there’s even a local legend about a witch that takes children into the woods. And then strange things start happening in and around the retreat. And lead more and more people to believe a little girl’s ghost is haunting the house.

8. My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurie

Daphne du Maurier is a queen of slow, unsettling, ominous plot development where you are left until the very end to wonder what really is going on.
The story is set in the nineteenth century. While traveling in Italy, Philip Ashley’s beloved uncle Ambrose marries a woman named Rachel and soon dies under mysterious circumstances. Philip is convinced Rachel is responsible for his death. But then he meets her. And he’s not sure of anything anymore

9. House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland

A dark modern fairytale – twisty and atmospheric, fantastical, gory at moments. Though it wasn’t perfect, it was definitely a story I will remember for a long time.
The story follows three Hollow sisters who went missing for a month when they were children and weird things started happening around them ever since they came back. Ten years later the oldest sister mysteriously disappears again, and to find her, the other two have to discover what happened to the three of them when they first went missing.

10. Real Murders (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries #1) by Charlaine Harris

Cozy mysteries are gaining in popularity and they are absolutely perfect to snuggle with on chilly autumn evenings. Though plot and twist-wise they are not exactly the cream of the crop, there’s something irresistible about the warm, moody settings, small-town vibes and a bunch of amateur detectives solving murders. This series is about a librarian who just can’t seem to stay away whenever there’s a crime scene around.

11. Keeper of Enchanted Rooms (Whimbrel House #1) by Charlie N. Holmberg

And if you’d rather set the mood with a cozy fantasy, The Whimbrel House series, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg. I loved it, it was so cozy and atmospheric; a haunted house trope with a historical setting and the most wholesome vibes ever.
Hulda Larkin has an interesting job – she helps owners of enchanted houses tame their homes. But her latest assignment, Whimbrel House, is proving to be a challenge even for someone with her experience. But the danger comes from a much darker force than any house Hulda ever dealt with… except maybe one.

Happy Film Friday!📚📽🎞

Published in 1952, John Steinbeck's epic novel East of Eden is a generational saga set in California's Salinas Valley. It closely mirrors the biblical stories of Cain and Abel and Adam and Eve, following the intertwined lives of the Trask and Hamilton families as they grapple with free will, good, evil, and the heavy weight of parental inheritance.

Zoe Kazan’s modern take on John Steinbeck’s classic will come to Netflix this fall, four years after its development was initially confirmed. Florence Pugh will star as Cathy Ames, antiheroine of the story, with Tracy Letts playing Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton playing Faye, Ciarán Hinds playing Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada (We Were Liars, The Hunger Games) playing Cal Trask and Joe Anders playing Aron Trask. Christopher Abbott will play Adam Trask, Mike Faist will portray Charles Trask and Hoon Lee will play Lee. Kazan’s grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 East of Eden movie. She wrote the screen adaptation of the novel and serves as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart.

This fresh interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece will explore t...
