PSA, do not start morning glories anywhere near your main garden.

We've removed well over 1,000 morning glory sprouts and rogue vines since April. Everywhere soil gets disturbed they pop up.

Don't get it wrong, they're beautiful, and we love their flowery vines, but they are a garden menace! Just a few vines will take over a garden, break corn stalks, smother peppers, and drop thousands of seeds for next year's frustration.

Bigroot morning glory is the only species that's native to Ohio. Otherwise, most of the common varieties available in seed packs are invasive, non-natives. Maybe consider its annual cousin, the mighty sweet potato, instead. Then you have something that is fully edible, visually stunning and won't try to take over your garden the following season!

It's time to let the tromboncinos mature. Once we have 7 straight squash growing for longterm storage, we'll go back to cutting the young, green ones for fresh eating

The loofah may not have enough time. We got a very late start and are only now getting our first flowers. By this time last year, we already had 10" gourds. Time will tell, but we'll hope fall frost holds off a little longer this year.

We're grateful for the response to Margo's handmade herbal salves. Since introducing these in May, she's had to fully restock twice! And a few kind folks told us we were selling them for too cheap! 😆

We've spent the last 3 summers remembering how to vend at markets and festivals, what shoppers want, and how we want to best use our time and energy. When we were encouraged to make a go of this in 2024, it had been five years since we'd set up a booth with Margo's paintings.

Thank you to everyone who's made a purchase from our tiny family business, engaged on our page, and encouraged us along the way! You are helping to shape the future of Sharpland. Thanks for standing by us while we figure it out.

Slowly but surely, we're photographing our stuff and building a website. How about we plant more seeds? Yes, there's still time to direct-sow seeds for a fall harvest in your Zone 6b garden!

With bush beans and carrots only needing 55-65 days to reach maturity, we can still get some quick wins at the end of this wet and wild growing season. This weekend, we'll start lettuce, spinach, chard, and cilantro. There's even time for more summer squash and cucumbers. Just choose varieties with the earliest days to maturity to improve your chances of success.

Late August is the perfect time to salvage a rough year in the garden, and get those 2nd and 3rd crops in so 2026 still ends with a bounty.

Another big one is in the books. The blackberry canes are pruned, but what do we do with all this empty space?

Well, it just so happens that, once again, a box of spring potatoes was forgotten... and found. The only responsible thing to do is find a place to plant them. We hate to lose the path that leads to our lovely neighbor's patio, but sometimes sacrifices must be made. After six years of wood chips breaking down, this path was hiding some beautiful soil.

This now becomes three experiments in one:

A. This is a brand-new garden bed. Anything can happen.
B. The spuds are planted just below the soil surface and covered with 2-3" of old chicken bedding. This is our take on the "Ruth Stout Method," which we learned about from Epic Gardening.
C. We added alfalfa pellets to the rows, which supposedly bring the soil to life by drawing in microbes, worms, and other beneficial critters that build fertility while the potatoes grow.

Fingers crossed that the wire fencing and plastic mesh deter the chickens from breaking in and scratching this all to pieces! We'll know around Thanksgiving whether this worked or if we're back to store-bought potatoes for the holidays. 🤞🤞

Sunday was a big day for scratching things off the list. Task #1 the coop cleanout.

The chickens usually get fresh bedding and p**p removal twice a year (late spring and late fall), but with fewer birds than normal, it just didnt need it. Today was the day, and with a thick bed of pine shavings, the ladies are good for the rest of the year.

We'll add another bale of shavings around Christmas for added insulation from the winter cold. Aside from a few minor repairs to the coop, this one is off the list!
