Stories like this gut me.

And to be clear, this isn’t a judgment of these parents. The blame falls on the nurse who intentionally hurt these sweet babies, not the families who trusted their children would be cared for.

I still believe there are more good healthcare professionals than bad ones. But hospitals aren’t immune from the same things that happen everywhere else. Many healthcare workers are incredible…but they’re still people. People get busy, they miss things, they have bad days. And sometimes they’re people who have absolutely no business taking care of other people.

I won’t get into all the details, but years ago my dad nearly died after a spinal fracture. Not because of the fracture itself, but because of complications afterward that weren’t being recognized. We knew something was wrong, but one nurse was more concerned over being right than listening to any of our concerns. He was wrong. And thankfully we persisted or the outcome likely would have been very different.

That’s also why I’ve always told people: if you can help it, don’t leave your loved ones alone in the hospital. Something bad isn’t guaranteed to happen, but having someone there who actually knows them, understands their baseline, notices changes, asks questions, and advocates hard for them matters.

And if you ever find yourself in that situation, don’t be afraid to be “that family member.” Ask questions, speak up, go find the charge nurse. Go higher if you need to. You can be respectful and still be persistent.

At the end of the day, nobody knows your loved one like you do. Trust your gut. Always.

If you make balloon arches and have been hand inflating double stuffed balloons because your electric pump “doesn’t work”…

Try covering the opposite side while you inflate. 🤯 Saved me so much time (and arm strength) on my last setup.
