SURPRISE!!!... A bee swarm is simply a colony splitting itself in two so it can reproduce. When a hive gets crowded in spring and the queen’s pheromone can’t reach all the workers, the bees prepare new queens. The old queen leaves with thousands of workers, forming that big swirling cloud people see.
They land somewhere nearby in a tight cluster while scout bees search for a new home. Once scouts agree on the best spot, the whole swarm moves together and starts a new colony.
It’s dramatic, but swarming bees are usually very gentle because they have no brood or hive to defend.
