Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is hard to miss this time of year.

That towering flower stalk can reach several feet tall, but take a closer look and it’s actually covered with hundreds of small yellow flowers that open a few at a time.

Mullein is a biennial, its first year is spent as a low rosette of those unmistakable soft, fuzzy leaves, and in its second year it sends up this huge flower spike, produces seed, and dies.

It’s an introduced plant in New Mexico and can be weedy, especially in disturbed areas, but it’s certainly an interesting one to photograph when the morning light catches all those fuzzy buds.

Every trip into the New Mexico desert seems to reveal something new.

One plant that has really caught my attention this year is Desert Marigold (*Baileya multiradiata*). It has one of the longest blooming seasons of our native wildflowers, often flowering from spring well into fall when moisture cooperates. Its bright yellow blooms can light up roadsides and open desert for months, while its beautiful silver foliage reflects sunlight to help the plant conserve water, one of the many adaptations that allows it to thrive in our high desert climate.

Growing nearby is native verbena (*Glandularia* spp.), another beautiful wildflower commonly found along roadsides, trail edges, and other disturbed areas throughout New Mexico. The exact species varies depending on where you are, but they all add welcome color to the landscape and provide an important nectar source for native pollinators.

One of my favorite parts of living and working here is slowing down long enough to notice these plants. The desert has a reputation for being brown and dry, but if you pay attention, it's full of color, texture, and incredible adaptations.

Some of the best projects are the ones that feel like they’ve always belonged.

For this landscape, we worked with the existing character of the neighborhood, adding subtle topography, a matching block and stucco wall, and a timeless desert palette to create a space that feels both refreshed and familiar.

💛 One of those plants I’ve seen but never stopped to learn more about.

This appears to be one of our native snakeweeds (Gutierrezia), a tough perennial shrub that quietly turns parts of the Sandia foothills golden each year.

It also makes me wonder how many of our native plants are slowly changing their ranges and abundance as our climate and weather patterns continue to shift.

💜 Texas sage in full bloom.

Despite its name, it isn’t actually a true sage. It’s often called the “barometer bush” because it tends to burst into bloom after periods of higher humidity or summer rains.

Its silver leaves help it thrive in our heat, and it often explodes with purple flowers after humidity or rain.

Keep an eye out, they’re blooming today around Albuquerque.
