Hey everyone.... I’ve been trying to post resources in stories, but haven’t had the brain or body power to make a grid post. It's been an intense week, but I’m safe, and didn’t have to evacuate.

However, a lot of artists made their homes in the historically black & latino neighborhood of Altadena, which was ravaged by the Eaton Fire. The amount of people I know who’ve lost everything, is massive. It’s a deeply devastating time in Los Angeles, full of shock & grief & tentative hope. I’m trying to contribute to as many GoFundMe’s as I can & help distribute info. As well as devise a sustainable plan for allocating donations thru button sales, going into the coming months. As this will be a very long term recovery.

We lack contemporary universal ways to indicate grieving in our lives, outside of verbally telling people, or other people sharing our stories for us. Both those options can be uncomfortable. When we’re experiencing it, grief intensely affects our lives & how we’re able to engage with the world around us, and it doesn't have a set end time, it lingers. I made this button a while ago, in hopes of lightening the load a bit, in a quiet way, for folks that are grieving. I’m happy to send one to anyone who’s been affected by the fires, but I recognize that might be tricky to do.

Also, just a giant shout-out to all the amazing c0vid conscious mask blocks in LA who’ve been providing health protective N95 masks to folks for the past couple years & have moved mountains to continue to do that work on a massive scale during these wildfires. N95/KN95 masking protects against covid, flu & all viral illness floating about, toxins from climate catastrophe like these wildfires & protection of your identity under the surveillance state.

Who else is a late diagnosed/discovered autistic??
April is Autism Awareness Month. Like many adult women, I figured out pretty late in the game that I’m neurodivergent.

It’s a wild ride to re-evaluate your life with the new understanding that your brain functions very differently than the majority of the population & the profound effects that has on one’s life, relationships, experiences & body. While some past struggles make a lot more sense now, they come with a significant sadness.
*
I’ve realized autism is likely a root cause of my chronic illnesses. A result of decades of unmitigated sensory overload, and how that profoundly wrecked my nervous system. Along with compulsory masking (trying to fit in & pass as neurotypical, which takes tons of energy).
*
It’s no surprise that the young white boy model of autism is NOT a universal experience. It manifests a lot differently in women, trans & non-binary folks, in part due to gendered socialization on top of autism.
*
Some ways it’s shown up for me:
- Taking things ppl say literally
- Over sharing & over explaining
- When someone shares a story, sharing a related story to show I sympathize (often viewed as rude)
- Getting excited by a conversation & interrupting to share (also rude)
- Missing most subtle unspoken social queues, which can make allistic ppl feel something is off & distance themselves
- Bad spacial relations: spilling food & drinks on myself often, tripping, running into furniture
- Not able to focus on other things if waiting for a delivery, appt, person etc
- Sensory tolerance issues to sounds, lights, scents like perfume, laundry detergent (results in migraines & systemic stress)
- That’s just the tip of the iceberg (not even getting into ADHD & executive dysfunction). It’s an endless list…
*
Autism manifests differently in everyone. What’s been your experience ???
