So, I’ve been reading the UCLA Jake Zeitlin (1902-1987) oral history volumes for a project I’m working on. Just randomly reached into my uncataloged material and pulled out Jake’s catalog 291, 1986. Catalog designed by Vance Gerry with a small woodcut by Vance. I never know what I am going to find.

Life in L.A.: A Portfolio of Women’s Writing.
[Santa Monica, CA]: Paradise Press, 1983.
Designer: Sheila Levrant Brettecille (b, 1940).
Printer: Susan King (b. 1947).
PROVENANCE: Francis Butler (1940-2024).
The Woman’s Building in Los Angeles was a pioneering non-profit arts and education center (1972-1991) dedicated to feminist art and the women’s movement, often described as a “feminist “ Mecca .”
Although not a complete roster of all the important women associated with the Women’s Building, there are important contributors to this portfolio, including Sheila Levrant Brettecille, Susan King, and Francis Butler. Previous owner, Francis Butler is known for her work at UC Berkeley and in France. During the early 1980s Butler taught classes at the Los Angeles Women’s Building.

In the early 2000s, when I was writing catalogs for Jeff Weber, Jeff dug out several boxes of material and he said “Why don’t you catalog this stuff.” It was 2 different collections of horological material. We issued a series of catalogs. Later Jeff showed me a notice in a journal that covered clock and watch making that Jeff’s firm was one of the leading dealers in horological material globally. 😙
