Pickup Winding Class #15 is this weekend at the Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix Arizona. Well over 200 students have attended this long runnig class. I will go over every step of pickup manufacturing with the students including hand winding and each student will complete at least 2 pickups with the option to do additional pickups. If you are interested in this class the next one will be the first week of November 2026 (we do classes every 6 months).school.of.luthiery

This is a 1963 Fender P Bass that came in for a rewind. The pickup belongs to Tim Leferbvre and was Removed from the Bass by Ryan
One coil was dead and could not be saved. The wire had to be removed and rewound by hand with 42 Plain Enamel and then potted in laquer. Some interesting notes about this pickup: the bobbins were very full and the final DC resistance was 11.5k which is higher than the standard spec on most P pickups. Replicas are available, just order one of my P pickups and ask for the 1963 spec.

1957: The 57 Experience P-90 by Arcane Inc. in distressed nickel. Alnico 5 8.5K wound on a vintage mechanical winding machine. Engraved base plates and individually serial numbered. They are also Quieter if grounded to the pots.

This is a 1970 Univox 4001 Rickenbacker Bass Replica Neck pickup out of a Bass that belongs to Jimmy Vivion The pickup was very microhonic and made excessive noise any time the pickguard was touched. The pickup made a hollow clicking sound any time I tapped on the cover so I tightened down the screws holding the cover down and potted the pickup to deaden the whole pickup then Jimmy put the pickup in the wax for 10 min. Another interesting aspect of this pickup is the large ceramic magnet it has. The magnet gave this pickup a pretty hot output combined with the 8k DC resistance it has. According to Jimmy the pickup sounds really good and the Univox is a really nice bass.

The Arcane Inc. George Lynch Humbuckers are available. We have them in Zebra, Black and Parchment with non aged and the Wartorn finishes. Alnico 8 trem spaced and 4 conductor. If you haven’t tried Alnico 8 you need to, It has almost the magnet strength of Ceramic so it hits the amp hard but the high end is sweet or pretty sounding and never harsh.
We also have the Mr. Scary single coils in stock so you can have a complete HSS or HS set for your guitar.

This is a vintage 1957 Gibson p-90 that came in for repair from Norik Renson. There is no reading on the coil and the bobbin is cracked and bowed. I will try to reconnect the leads and peel back some of the wire to see if I can save the coil, but I suspect the pickup has an internal break from the bobbin cracking and shifting. If the coil cant be saved I will rewind the pickup on our vintage mechanical winding machine with 42 Enamel wire just like what’s on there. A full video of the repair / rewind will follow.

The 59 Experience Tele bridge pickup. Alnico 5, staggered magnets, 8.31k and wound by hand. This one has white string but we also build them with black string. A slightly beefed up tele bridge pickup that has just enough push to hear the sweet spot and avoid excessive highs.Available at arcaneinc.com, Reverb Ebay and through our dealers.- #1959

This is a 52 Tele Bass pickup rewind I did for The coil gave no reading and the fiberboard was about to come loose from the magnets which shifted the coil and caused the failure. I removed the wire and reinstalled the fiberboard on the magnets, glued the magnets in place, dipped the coil form in lacquer, did some additional insulation and rewound the coil by hand with Enamel wire. Word from Joe was it sounds good.
