Earlier in the week I shared a single Van Briggle candlestick - shape number CS #7 (CS for Candle Stick :-) ) that I was able to clean up from a rough life it had. Here is a pair I still have around because the colors, shape and glaze are just my cup of tea - and these had a much more pampered life! Note the curdling or separation of the green glaze around the base, and the nice dark chocolate brown rather than the usual milk chocolate brown normally seen in this famous Mountain Crag Brown color. For those just learning - the marking "U.S.A." on the base is indicative of a manufacture during the 1922-1926 period. I always appreciate your likes and comments, and if I can help you with any Van Briggle questions send them to my PM! Have a great rest of the weekend! Dan

Interesting before and after. This poor candle holder was left in a backyard garden for decades. I found snail p**p, dirt, grime, leaves and other oddities in it, but the worst of all was the glaze had really become faded from the outdoors. However, with some careful cleaning, slow and steady, it came back to a bit closer to the original colors! I started with just water and some Dawn to take off the worst of it, then slowly over a few days cleaned it with a toothbrush and Barkeepers Friend. It came back quite nicely didn't it? This piece is known as CS #7 in the old literature.

Following yesterdays reality post, I decided to dig around the cabinets to see if there were any pots around that I might be willing to part with, and came up with 7 unique and interesting pieces. The asking prices are a bit high, but there are watchers watching already. If anything strikes your fancy, let me know here and I can arrange free shipping if we can work out a deal. Have a great weekend! See them here: https://bit.ly/DamarDesign

I alluded to this reality about Van Briggle several months ago and it proved to be one of my least popular posts. But, it's reality and time is proving it out. First, I love Van Briggle Art Pottery and I've been studying it, buying it and selling it for nearly 50 years. However, the market has hit an ongoing sales slowdown brought on by absurd listing prices, hundreds of new pots dragging the market down, and a general lack of interest.

I personally have been buying and selling Van Briggle on many platforms, but mostly on eBay; willing to hunt for bargains to add to my personal collection or maybe just buy it to flip and make a small profit, or sometimes somewhere in between. In the last 20 years I've bought as many as 60 pots in a year, and as few as 25. I still watch the market as I always have, but I haven't found a decent deal on a piece I'd add to my collection in over 4 months! Nothing, and I'm looking. Further, for the first time in 20 years, I have zero Van Briggle listed for sale on eBay - since I'm not able to buy something I want or can resell, I have nothing to sell!

There are many factors I'm sure, but I'm not here to hash that about. It's exhausting watching the same semi-premium pieces stay listed for years and in some cases, over a DECADE at prices that ensure they will never be bought. It's exhausting watching the same mid-century to modern pieces stay listed and clutter the listings with pieces that may never sell, even at $50. So, I'll keep watching and hoping for the market to turn and with it, the joy of collecting to return. But for now, the Van Briggle world is very quiet. I'll post something more upbeat next week so everyone who only wants positive news will get their fill. Until then, I'll keep the excellent new Ryan Adams record - Big Colors - on repeat and dream about permanent sunshine and flowers for brains. 🙃

This is something you don't see everyday in the big world of Van Briggle - a set of 6 lamps based on the #645 Leaves and Violets vase with all 6 authentic Van Briggle lamp shades with butterflies. I've retrofit them with modern LED lights but they are beautiful and rarely seen. Thanks for visiting today and stay safe!

Yikes it's been a while since I posted anything. After over a year exclusively working from home, and now being fully vaccinated, we decided to change life up a bit and spent nearly a month working and going to school from our home in Maui. A lot of the normal routines, like keeping up on Facebook went by the wayside in an Aloha haze. But, I'm back with a good one!

I've had these vases a long time - they are 1920's era (probably early) Originals done by O.F. Bruce, a reportedly deaf mute potter who worked at Van Briggle at that time. It is unusual to find any Originals from that time period and having these shows great artisan craft in very heavy designs - much heavier than the 1950's and newer Originals of the Hull/Wills era. They are very weighty and thick, with very intricate plain designs. While there are O.F. Bruce pieces around, they aren't exactly common, and they can be a bit pricey! These came to me in separate deals as throw-ins just a month apart, but they sure look a fine pair! I'd love to hear your O.F. Bruce stories and see your pieces if you have any.

Sorry again for being away, and I hope to spend more time sharing VB stuff with you soon. Dan

It's always interesting to see the differences in Van Briggle pieces, in color, and in size. These are the very common shape #645 Leaves and Violets motif. Notice the size difference is very significant through the years. Just as American's decided along the way to prosperity that bigger is better, same went for Van Briggle. The newer the production, the bigger they got! Have a great day VB friends. Get in line for your vax and stay safe!

Nothing too fancy here, except an interesting marking on the base that helps us understand when certain marks were used. First off, this is #437 vase in a Mistletoe design with a nice bit of clay showing through. It is clearly dated 1907, but also seems to have the marks consistent with 08-12 pieces where there are marks left and right of the VB mark. The clay, as you can see is very dark, and the inside of the piece appears to be a shiny clear glaze. It seems to be from the point where they transitioned in 1907 to the 1908-1912 style markings. It is surprisingly very heavy and the color is like a robins egg blue. See if these marks are consistent with your information! Love to hear your comments!

This is a piece that is a bit unusual in that it isn't soft in the design, or smooth flowing like most Van Briggle. This one is shape 762 with Pine Cones and Pine Needles designed by Emma Kincaid and it's really big and heavy - this example is one of several I've had over the years, but it has striking colors and hand etching in the design. The piece shown is from the 1908-1912 period. For the 75th anniversary of Van Briggle in 1974, this piece was selected to be recast and issued as a numbered (edition of 500) Limited Edition piece. You can find examples of both versions on eBay and around the auction circuit, but they don't come cheap! Hope you are all still staying safe, wearing masks, staying home as much as possible so that we can all come out and play on the other side! Your comments are always appreciated.

Here is a really nice vase, fairly common shape #325 dated 1905 with an unusual curdled glaze on the top and very smooth on the bottom, yet it's all the same color. The curdling is perfectly consistent around the entire vase. Usually you would see curdling when a second color is used as overspray and created a separation, but this was clearly intentional with the same color throughout. Lovely.

NOT VB related...good morning. Our incredibly lovely 9 year old Girl Scout is once again selling Girl Scout cookies, albeit this year the process is wholly online. This year, due to the pandemic and stay at home restrictions, Girl Scout cookie sales are restricted to online only - buy and have them shipped to your home anywhere in the country. I know that some of you may not have the option to buy in your area, so no obligations of course, but if you need a fix, here's your chance! Plus, there's a short video of E giving her pitch and a pic of her barely managing to keep this big Van Briggle in her loving arms! (No pottery was harmed in taking this photo!)
