I alluded to this reality about Van Briggle several months ago and it proved to be one of my least popular posts. But, it's reality and time is proving it out. First, I love Van Briggle Art Pottery and I've been studying it, buying it and selling it for nearly 50 years. However, the market has hit an ongoing sales slowdown brought on by absurd listing prices, hundreds of new pots dragging the market down, and a general lack of interest.
I personally have been buying and selling Van Briggle on many platforms, but mostly on eBay; willing to hunt for bargains to add to my personal collection or maybe just buy it to flip and make a small profit, or sometimes somewhere in between. In the last 20 years I've bought as many as 60 pots in a year, and as few as 25. I still watch the market as I always have, but I haven't found a decent deal on a piece I'd add to my collection in over 4 months! Nothing, and I'm looking. Further, for the first time in 20 years, I have zero Van Briggle listed for sale on eBay - since I'm not able to buy something I want or can resell, I have nothing to sell!
There are many factors I'm sure, but I'm not here to hash that about. It's exhausting watching the same semi-premium pieces stay listed for years and in some cases, over a DECADE at prices that ensure they will never be bought. It's exhausting watching the same mid-century to modern pieces stay listed and clutter the listings with pieces that may never sell, even at $50. So, I'll keep watching and hoping for the market to turn and with it, the joy of collecting to return. But for now, the Van Briggle world is very quiet. I'll post something more upbeat next week so everyone who only wants positive news will get their fill. Until then, I'll keep the excellent new Ryan Adams record - Big Colors - on repeat and dream about permanent sunshine and flowers for brains. 🙃
