Happy Juneteenth!! If you don’t know what it’s all about, your not alone. I’ll tell you what I’ve discovered. I had to educate myself as well since our schools (at least when I was growing up) didn’t teach us this very important information. Like most black history.
Juneteenth is the oldest holiday commemorating the emancipation of slavery from the United States in 1865. It’s also known as Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, and Liberation Day. Despite Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of two years prior, the slave owners of Texas neglected to mention to the 250,000 enslaved black people in the most remote areas the news. They were finally free. Shocker!
Juneteenth is a symbol of total freedom from the slave trade across the United States. This doesn’t mean that black people of our country were treated equally, humanly, and or with respect. We have a long road ahead to atone for those sins that are still happening to this day.
On Thursday President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Miss Opal Lee, , The Grandmother of Juneteenth, has been working hard for decades to make this day happen. She’s 94 years old!!
Let’s keep pushing for equality for all. It’s a long road ahead but we must work together to make it happen.
