Founded in 1951 by Pete and Sylvia Zelek, the shop is celebrating 75 years in business, while their daughter Mary Zelek carries on their legacy at the 1001 Reid Ave. location today. “My parents started this shop in what used to be a gas station and grew it into one of the largest and most successful gift and floral shops in the region.”Mary and the shop support the community in many ways – including by sharing their time and talent (and lots of flowers!) with Second Harvest Food Bank, Lorain County Health & Dentistry, and the Lorain Historical Society.

In addition to having a booth at the 58th annual Lorain International Festival, we will also have a float in the parade this year! The parade is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, beginning at 11:30 am and traveling along Broadway.

This photo shows shop owner Mary’s nephew Jeff Zelek working on our float design – which features the florist basket designed by his grandfather Pete in the 70’s. We are lucky to have a talented and experienced engineer and construction professional designing our parade entry.

Zelek Flower Shop is excited to announce that we will be participating in the 58th annual Lorain International Festival!

Join us June 26–28 at Black River Landing, where we’ll be hosting a booth filled with fun, color, and celebration.
Stop by our tent where you’ll find flags representing more than 100 countries at our interactive selfie station. We’ll also have a gift basket raffle, demonstrations, and more throughout the weekend.

We’d love to see you there as we celebrate community, culture, and 75 years of being a proud Lorain business!

As Memorial Day approaches, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge our co-founder, and Mary's dad, Pete Zelek. He's shown here (on the left) during his time in the US Army. Pete enlisted in 1942 and served in several European countries, including England, Germany, and France.

We pay tribute to Pete and to all members of the military for their service to our country.

As another school year comes to a close, we’re reminded of the many graduation bouquets, prom corsages, and homecoming mums we’ve created over the years. It’s always a joy to play a small part in these meaningful milestone moments! These vintage ribbons are sure to bring back memories for many of you.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms—and to those who love with a mother’s heart.
This week, we pause to honor our own mom, Sylvia Zelek. Alongside her husband (and our dad) Pete, she founded Zelek Flower Shop in 1951, planting the roots of a family business that continues to grow today.
She was a devoted mother of four, a proud grandmother of four, a longtime member of Zonta, and an exceptional cook. She had that rare gift of blending sharp business sense with genuine warmth—equally at ease with numbers as she was with people.
Customers loved her personality, her remarkable memory for names and stories, and her deep knowledge of all things floral. She ran the front of the shop with grace and confidence, offering comfort, guidance, and kindness to everyone who walked through our doors—always with a smile, a pencil tucked behind her ear, and a true love for helping others.

Have you visited our Mini Mall? Located in our lower level, it includes many different “shops”, each featuring unique gift and decor items. Candles, baskets, stuffed animals, holiday items, artificial and dried flowers, ribbon and much more have been a part of the Mall over the years. The assortment changes often depending on season and other factors.
The Mall opened in the 70’s, the brainchild of our co-owner (and Mary’s dad) Pete. Stop by to see what the Mall has to offer!
