Thousands of years ago, artists in ancient Roman and Byzantine mosaics were already creating images one tiny piece at a time.

That same idea eventually evolved into early pixel art and video games like Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt, and Super Mario Bros… where entire worlds were built from tiny blocks of color.

As technology evolved, so did the detail, the movement, and the artistry behind pixel-based design.

And today, modern artists are still using that same concept — turning tiny squares, tiles, beads, and blocks into larger images full of color, texture, and life.

Different tools. Same idea.
One tiny piece at a time.

Sometimes you buy the bones, not the finished piece.

These were giving “broken down clearance aisle.” 😅
But the shape? Perfect.

A little demolition, a lot of sanding, and now they’re headed toward black, gold, and iridescent mosaic shimmer. ✨

Traditional mosaic gives you room to play. Pixel mosaic asks for precision. Same medium family… very different rules.

Turns out grout isn’t neutral. 👀

With tiny pixel mosaics, the background color can completely change how the piece reads—which means traditional “rules” don’t always create the best final result.

Sometimes the art tells you what it needs.
