These two bit are very special to me. I’d made a few prior to this. Chuck said ok it's time to put silver in them. Ok, now I've got silver in them but I have no tools, no idea how to even make my chicken scratch. So I asked if he'd engrave them for me. He said he would. These are my bits but engraved by him. Very special to me.

A CEI bit later to be known as a Lacy bit by Chuck. Recently I was asked to build this bit (a Chuck Irwin knock off).

Chuck and I were at a Brannaman roping - both with bits. He was sitting at my table and people would come by to see what he had. He'd lean back, point his thumb at me and say, their not mine, their my competitors. I say “his are over there, these are Chuck Irwin knock offs”. He'd get a big kick out of that. So here's my Chuck Irwin knock off.

Some of my best reading was Arnold Rojas. I enjoyed his stories, including this bit he talked about from years past.

A friend asked about this bit and thought I should explain the story behind it.

It’s a Santa Barbara cheek, Queen of all cheeks popularized by Jesus Mardueno. My favorite cheek, but is mostly known as having a spade mouthpiece.

When I started building bits I thought it would be nice to showcase this cheek even if the horse was not a spade bit horse.

I am sure most have picked this bit a part, but I well explain the little things I did.

Starting at the top, just above the hing I put a silver button where the spade brace would be. Second a CEI frog mouthpiece, one that most any horse will take to. Third, the open space by the bell. So this is my version of a modern day Mardueno. One that would pay tribute to the Santa Barbara and look fantastic on a horse.

I finally made it for an order, now I plan on making one for myself.
