Seems weird to be picking gourds in this warm, sunny weather, but the first batch is ready for harvest and the pumpkins aren't far behind! We hope to have them out for sale, along with some tomatoes and peppers, within the next week.

I just wanted to let everyone know that even though the farmstand is still closed for the winter the hens are laying eggs like crazy and we do have eggs available at HoneyGirl Gourmet right on Main Street in Geneseo, NY.

We have a lot going on at the farmstand right now! Pumpkins, gourds, and winter squash are out there along with some of the last late summer veggies. I have a little story about this tree. Last spring at my 'real' job ( ) the Golden Chain tree near the house was having an exceptionally prolific bloom. Because everyone who works at Palmiter's is a huge plant nerd, Mrs. Palmiter made sure we all went up to take a look at it. It was gorgeous. I mean, this tree was entirely covered in flowers. Just, wow. They don't sell Golden Chain trees at Palmiter's. I'm not sure why, they might be hard to find, or prohibitively expensive, or maybe they just don't like living in a pot. Anyway, if Palmiter's had sold them, I would have bought one then and there. Fast forward almost a year and a half and Mrs. Palmiter brings out a tree in a pot and says it's for me. I asked what it was and, of course, it's a sapling from her Golden Chain tree. She dug it up, potted it, and kept it watered until she knew it was going to live, then she gave it to me. Because I thought it was beautiful.

That's what it's like working for a small independent family-run business. Please do everything you can to support these kinds of businesses. I know it takes a little more time and effort, and often a little more money, but these places are so important. Big box stores, fast food restaurants, and grocery chains have had a huge advantage for the past 6 months, so if there's a mom and pop business you love, get back there and buy something!

It has been very busy at the farm! We have fresh zucchini and yellow summer squash, flower bouquets, and some homemade jams and jellies avaliable at the farmstand. We also have a small batch of whole fresh free range organic fed chicken available through this weekend. They are $3.50 a pound, and weigh 4 to 5 pounds, so cost between $14 and $18 each. Coming Soon to the Farm Stand!! Shelling peas in the next few days, then some Sugar Snap peas. So far the tomatoes and peppers are doing well, too. This year we planted a bunch of different canning and sauce tomatoes, along with the cherry and grape ones we had last year.

Poppies and Peonies and Primrose! Getting in some much-needed flower garden clean-up and puppy time in this perfect gardening weather. The Poppy is 'Beauty of Livermore' and the Peony is 'Renato,' both from Palmiter's Garden Nursery.
