We’ve had a lot of precipitation recently on the Front Range. Did you know that swallows have a mixed relationship with the rain? ☔️

Too much rain can ground insects, leaving swallows hungry and unable to feed their babies.💧

However, before a storm, when the barometric pressure drops, insects have to fly closer to the ground which makes hunting easier for swallows as the insects are more concentrated in a lower altitude zone. 🦟

Last week was a rainy one for the Front Range, with 3 days of nearly continuous rain. After months of dry weather, it was a welcome respite, but some species, particularly swallows, can struggle in continuous wet weather because they feed on-the-wing and rain (and snow) weighs down flying insects. Thankfully, swallows have a way to deal with this by flying closer to the ground.

Western Tanagers are arriving! You may have already seen some in your yard or heard the male's raspy, halting song from the top of your neighbor's pine tree.

You can give them a stopover snack on their way up into the foothills. While they're primarily insectivores, they also love suet, fruit like oranges, and jelly. Have you seen Western Tanagers yet?
