It’s easy to forget how unglamorous the making of Kind of Blue actually was.

This wasn’t some grand, carefully funded artistic statement. It was a normal studio booking in 1959. Union-scale pay. A fixed amount of time. Everyone expected to do the job and move on.

Nine hours later, they’d finished.

No long lock-outs. No months of tweaking. No sense that this would become the jazz record people would still be talking about decades later.

That’s what always stops me when I think about it.

The conditions were ordinary. Almost forgettable. And yet the result wasn’t.

What you hear on Kind of Blue isn’t excess or perfectionism — it’s restraint. Musicians listening closely. Leaving space. Making choices quickly, then standing by them.

There’s something quietly reassuring about that. Great work doesn’t always announce itself while it’s happening. Sometimes it just feels like a solid day’s work with people you trust.

We’ve been revisiting the full story behind the album — not just the mythologised version, but what actually went on in the room, how little it cost, and why that might matter more than we realise.

The world of music has lost a percussion and timpani legend, Kurt-Hans Goedicke passed away on August 21, 2025. Kurt was the principal timpanist of the London Symphony from 1964-2000 and might be the most heard timpanist in the world having played on six of the first Star Wars films as well as Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark and many more films. After 36 years with the London Symphony, Kurt became head of the timpani and percussion department at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland. Zildjian mourns the loss of this percussion legend.

Drummers across the globe know the Zildjian name because it’s emblazoned on every shiny cymbal they make. What’s less known is that the family has been making their famous cymbals, with a secret process, for more than four centuries.
