From 1902 to today.
There is something incredibly grounding about working with wood that carries a story. This material was harvested from a historic ranch out west founded way back in 1879, and salvaged from a calving barn raised in 1902.
Holding a piece of history like this in the workshop is a true honor. Every ring tells a story of the elements, the old West, and a century of hard work. Now, it’s getting a second life—repurposed into something new to be passed down and cherished by the next generations.
History isn’t lost; it’s just being reshaped.

The handle is officially fully shaped, which means Stage One of the build process is in the books!
Now, it’s time to transition into Stage Two: selecting the perfect hoop woods. Next up, I’ll be matching the grains and colors to the handle, prepping the strips, and getting everything glued up and attached. The entire hoop assembly and the handle integration happen simultaneously in one critical glue-up.

The clamp-vs-vacuum debate is real, but when it comes to laminating handles, the vacuum bag is an absolute game-changer.
Don’t get me wrong—there is absolutely nothing wrong with a classic setup of clamps and blocks. Clamps have built some of the finest woodwork in history, and they’ll always have a place in the shop.
But once you switch to vacuum press laminating, it’s hard to look back. Instead of fighting with individual pressure points, shifting layers, and clamp collusion, the vacuum bag applies perfectly uniform atmospheric pressure across every square inch of the handle. You get seamless glue lines, zero dry spots, and way less setup stress.
Both methods get the job done, but for uniform clamping pressure I think this is the way to go. The air does the heavy lifting for me.
How do you glue up your laminations? Drop your shop preference below!

podcast giveaway net is officially in the bag and drying.
Today is all about laying the foundation for this custom build. We’re laminating the handle together, getting everything perfectly aligned, and locking it down inside the vacuum bag.
For a special build like this, precision is everything. Unlike traditional mechanical clamps that can create uneven pressure spots, the vacuum pump pulls a uniform, massive amount of atmospheric pressure across every single square inch of the curve. It forces out excess glue, eliminates gaps, and ensures flawless, rock-solid glue lines that will stand up to a lifetime on the water.
The foundation is set—now we let the pressure do its work and wait for the cure before we start shaping.
Stay tuned to see how this one comes together!

There is nothing quite like that exact moment. When that dull, chalky, freshly-machined surface hits the mineral spirits and completely wakes up, it’s pure magic. It’s the ultimate sneak peek of what the final finish will do, especially with highly figured pieces like a deep Buckeye or Spalted Sycamore.
It really lets you see the true depth of the eyes, the spalting, and the natural contrasts, which makes choosing the complementary hoop woods so much easier. A striking contrast or a perfect tonal match always looks best when you can actually preview the wood’s true character.
What kind of blanks are on the bench today, and what direction are you leaning for the hoop pairings?

I don’t take orders for custom nets, I start relationships. It kicks off with a call where we swap fishing stories, talk about how you fish, and figure out which woods fit your style. I’ll send you a couple of handpicked options to choose from. Once we get going, I’ll bring you along for the ride so you can see your net go from a block of wood to something you’ll pass down.
