I was scrolling on Facebook the other day and ran into Ms. Onyx. A cyber crime fighting 12 year old! 🦸🏾‍♀️

Yes, please! I immediately ran to Amazon to purchase the origin story. It’s such a fun read with beautiful images that really bring the story to life.

In an age where artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly and threat actors are getting more creative in their schemes to take advantage of innocent people—Ms. Onyx was created for a time such as this. To teach children valuable lesson on cybersecurity and responsibility.

It’s like cyber chase for a new generation and I can’t wait to read the next story to see Elnora’s journey unfold as guardian of the grid. 💻

These are AI photos.
But they are representative of something real.

I made them of my dad, Harold, and me. He passed when I was twelve. Before he died, he was writing an autobiography called Waiting for My YaYa. A story that never got to be finished. When I created YaYa Books, it was my way of keeping his spirit alive, and carrying forward the creativity and love of the arts he passed down to me.

My dad always reminded me of Laurence Fishburne’s character in Boyz N The Hood—wise, thoughtful, intelligent, and set apart. Plus, I thought they looked like brothers lol.

He never got to see me graduate, get married, or grow into the woman I am today. That hurts so bad and often feels unfair but I know he’s proud. I can feel it every time I create, every time I build something beautiful out of love.

I’ve had my criticisms of technology, but moments like this remind me that it can hold space for grief too. It can help us see what love might’ve looked like if time had stretched a little longer and I find that comforting. ❤️

✨ God has been moving in such a powerful way in my life, and I’m so grateful. After walking through a tough season, it feels amazing to step into opportunities that align with my purpose.

I had the honor of speaking to a youth group and their parents about something I’m passionate about, the hidden dangers of social media and AI. I even took them back in time with a story about navigating chat rooms as a teen (including that dial-up internet sound 😂).

Before I wrapped up, I shared some of my favorite reads on internet safety and introduced them to my heart project, YaYa Books. 📚✨

It’s a blessing to plant seeds through both stories and books. ❤️

Hi, guys! So good to see you!👋🏾☺️

This book. Oh my gosh, this book!!!

I randomly stumbled across Eliza and Her Monsters on Amazon and was instantly intrigued by the trope—a shy, quiet, teenaged girl, struggling to reconcile her digital persona as LadyConstellation, anonymous creator of a wildly successful online comic called Monstrous Sea, with her offline life. The internet, its stronghold on society and the consequences that come with it, is something I can talk about for hoursssss so I was very interested in this.

This book has so much depth around creative expression, mental health, falling in love for the first time, discovering your voice and your self worth.

And the writing is just beautiful, with words that arrest and liberate at the same time. 😩

I flew through this so fast. Even with all of its depth, it felt cozy and nostalgic. Like the type of book that keeps you up at night with a flash light under the covers. The type of book that makes a home in your heart with characters that linger and nestle into your skin. Characters you want to root for because many of us are Eliza, have been Eliza, or know an Eliza personally. This book had me in the bathroom crying tears of joy at 5am this morning. I didn’t think a young adult book would wreck me like this 🤣😭.

This is the type of story that validates my passion for literature and I’m happy to say it’s my new favorite. Totally a 5 star read! Highly recommend! If you read it, let me know! ☺️❤️

BTW, I’ve added it to our Bookshop.Org affiliate site so you can purchase from us if you’d like. Link in bio! ☺️

My husband said this to me and it’s hilarious because I really don’t need glasses. I have 20/20 vision but I wear non prescriptions and blue light glasses all the time.

They make me feel smart and grounded and yes, sometimes I forget they’re on my head and I put on another pair. 🤪

Hey YaYa Fam! It’s so good to see y’all! 🤎

I’ve been reading, writing, laughing, praising, crying, working, resting and just taking life one day at a time.

Currently trying to strike a balance between producing and just simply being.

I’m also trying to figure out my place in the digital world. I’ll be so honest with y’all, I struggle with social media. While I recognize the benefits like meeting incredible people like you guys, sharing impactful content and discovering all kinds of cool things I didn’t know before—I have to acknowledge the other side that is overstimulation and its many teenaged mutant offspring.

Scrolling and not knowing what’s going to pop up next, the roller coaster ride of emotions, the addictive nature of checking for notifications, It’s often too much. So, I’m figuring out how to engage in a way that serves this community and protects my peace. That may look like newsletters instead of Instagram posts. We shall see!

Thanks for always giving me grace and I want yall to know that while our main site has not relaunched yet, you can ALWAYS shop our Bookshop affiliate page. It’s in the bio and open 24/7. And if there’s a book you want to buy and it’s not listed, just let me know and I’d be happy to add it for you. ☺️

But anyway, what’s been going on? What are you reading? How are you feeling? Catch me up! 🤸🏾‍♀️

Last year, my mental health was in shambles. I was working a full time job, finishing my degree online, and running YaYa. I was doing too much and putting way too much pressure on myself. Anxiety and depression hit me hard and brought a lot of buried pain to the surface.

As a result, I was forced to step away from YaYa and focus on healing.

I am in a much better place these days. It turns out the light at the end of the tunnel wasn’t a figment of my imagination.

I want you to know that even in my absence, I have never stopped caring about YaYa, community, and the magic of books.

We will return better and stronger in 2024.

Thank you all so much for your support!!

It’s been such a beautiful and rewarding journey.

I’ve been thinking about vulnerability a lot lately, especially in the realms of friendship and social media.

What does it look like in practice? How does it feel? 🤔

I’ve noticed this culture emerging. One of pushing people to seek therapy while also shutting them out of important emotional connections that only a tribe can provide.

How do we make and hold space for transparency and healing within our communities in this superficial age where many don’t know how to open up or don’t feel safe to do so?

For Bridget and many others with a story to tell, poetry is a saving Grace. There is so much beauty in Black women bearing their souls. The beauty of releasing and restoring. The beauty of informing the hearts and minds of listeners so that they may be renewed.

Personally, I’ve learned so much from our pain and I’ve learned even more from our joy. A large part of the knowledge that I’ve gained from Black woman has helped to keep me alive. I’m inspired by Bridget’s bold vulnerability and her poetic voice in Strength Beneath The Scars. I must warn you, this is a heavy read but it is one of triumph. Perhaps it will be Bridget’s story that will help to keep someone alive. If you’re interested, please give Bridget a follow, learn more about what motivates her work and purchase a copy. 🤎
