Cut back tired plants that have finished blooming for the year. Fertilize your perennials for the last time this year and let them harden them off for winter. Use a fertilizer with a higher component of phosphorus or potassium. Deadheading spent blossoms often prolongs the bloom time of many perennials and keeps the garden looking its best. Remove any plants badly affected by insects or disease.
