A remarkable survivor from the golden age of American design — this Art Deco Uarco Accu-Rite autographic receipt machine is the finest example we’ve encountered. Likely made in the late 1930s, the machine embodies the streamlined elegance of the era and was the undeniable design jewel of the line with a presence elevating it beyond ordinary office equipment.

Even more compelling, it remains loaded with original pre-printed receipts dated “194_” for The Home Appliance Company of Dodge City, Kansas, complete with the wonderfully evocative two-digit telephone number “67.” These untouched details offer a rare and intimate glimpse into small-town American commerce on the eve of the postwar years.

An exceptional piece for collectors of industrial design, Americana, or early business machines.

The machine measures 20 inches long, 8 inches wide, is 5 3/4” tall at the highest point, and weighs a little over 15 lbs. Chrome finish is in very good condition as is the green enamel finish. There are some minor surface rust spots in places on the bottom. Key included and lock works. Carbon paper roll is present along with a nearly full load of receipts. $99 (shipping available at additional charge)

Today’s tip for collectors is about gramophone reproducers. An antique gramophone purchase major consideration is the condition of the reproducer which holds the stylus (needle) and the diaphragm which reproduce the sound and transmit it to whatever device then amplifies the sound. The first two images show an Edison “C Reproducer” used on cylinder phonographs such as that shown in the third image where the reproducer is held in the open metal circle. The fourth image shows a later reproducer for a Peter Pan compact phonograph.

If you know what to look for examining a reproducer you can accomplish the check yourself. Various online videos can show you what to look for. If a reproducer is absent from a gramophone in otherwise good condition, you can purchase a rebuilt Edison reproducer from several reputable workshops for about $170. If your reproducer needs to be rebuilt, that typically costs about $70 – a very worthwhile investment in sound quality. Rebuilding prices on later reproducers vary.

Lastly, steel needles for reproducers that use them are inexpensive and readily available by mail order. Remember, the rule was (and is) one needle for one play!

Welcome to our new series of posts exploring antiques and antiquities. How did ancient Eqyptians avoid work in the Afterlife? Your loved ones buried you with plenty of ushabti. The ushabti was your servant in the afterlife and frequently carried an inscription from the Book of the Dead. Ushabti are found in various styles and sizes which change with the period in which they were made.

The first example shown from the Uncommon owner’s private collection is blue faience (a type of ceramic material) with black painted hieroglyphs and facial features which dates to the 21st Dynasty (1069-945 BC). The example in green faince is somewhat later from the 30th Dynasty (380-342 BC).

If you’d like to add an Egyptian artifact to your collection, ushabti are a good starting point.

Fresh out of our restoration workshop is this Seth Thomas 30 hour time and strike shelf clock which dates to the mid-1850s-1860s. It features a beautiful flame mahogany veneer and floral reverse painted glass panel and has a new metal dial with vinyl overlay which is an exact replica of an original created by our workshop and Jordan Zarate of FJ Wrapz & Graphix. The clock measures 24.5 x 15.5 and 4.5 inches and weighs just over 15 lbs. $199. Shipping available (USA only).

We restore clocks to working condition, not “as new” condition which we believe reduces the historical value of time pieces. There are some losses to the reverse painted glass, minor small losses to veneer, and we have added a stabilizing strip to a dry crack in the back of the case. Leader & Times FJ Wrapz & Graphix
