Finally acquired one of the rarest, and most expensive coin I have ever dreamed of having. Indeed it is well beat up and damaged, but as I always say when it comes to these really old and rare coins, find me another one… they have become increasingly harder to find, and the history behind the 1792 half disme is quite fascinating. From folk lure about being made from the silverware from George and Martha Washington, to Thomas Jefferson physically spending these coins personally to get them out into circulation. For many years this coin was misunderstood and treated as a pattern coin, much like the Gobrecht Dollar was, but in fact these coins were created as our nation’s very first form of legal tender. Now of course these tiny coins were not minted in the Philadelphia mint yet, because the building wasn’t quite ready, but this was a humble start to the beginning chapter and birth to our nation’s coinage. From the half cent to the half union, to think it all started with the half disme, 234 years ago.
