And this is why we need a new point of view and new ideas! Thank you Vote Cota for thinking about the small businesses!
What the Canopy Hides…
The festivals in Lewiston are amazing.
My wife, daughter, and I walk up the hill and go to every single one. But I am starting to realize they are not amazing for everyone. A lot of our local shops are cut out during the festivals, and I mean that quite literally.
The way we position the canopies creates a tunnel down the center of the street. People avoid the sidewalks, avoid the businesses that are there year-round, not because they aren't incredible, but because they aren't seen.
We need to figure this out because festivals compound their daily concerns, such as where to park and customers who wanted to come see them end up avoiding them on those days. Festivals should complement local business and not compete against it because Monday morning comes soon, and it is the local businesses that can draw them back.
We all want an economy that drives Lewiston year-round and festivals could be one of those things that drive it if we do a better job of connecting them to local businesses and highlighting what we have to offer all 4 seasons not just summer.
So here is what I am proposing, Let's stop treating festivals as a separate driver from local business; let’s stop having planning and discussions around them instead of with them and by all means let’s embrace and support them.
Simple fixes are available.
We could ensure every small business has an opening to their front door from the tent wall. Let them decide how to drive traffic to themselves, utilizing that space. Some businesses may choose a simple sign, others may choose to add a small sitting area hosted by them, Others may realize that the best plan would be to set up a canopy of their own. Now this is where people will comment they already can buy a spot and do that. My question is why should they have to?
If the Village wants to say they are for small business that they are for developing the year-round economy, then this is where we separate, if we are just talking about it or actually doing something. Me? I'm more of a doing type of guy.
