Jigging walleyes in super shallow water is our jam—paid off big with this 21” saugeye in Martin Bay back in 2018. Just 2 feet deep on a pearltruse curly tail! Now I’m wondering: could that beast still be cruising out there? If so, it’d be pushing state record territory (NE saugeye record is around 8-9 lbs / 28”). What’s your biggest saugeye story? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve noticed the jig-and-crawler trend. Here’s a little bit about the business end of my take on that.

Been running these Trokar Pro V Finesse Jigs for two seasons now, and there’s never a time I don’t have at least two of these tied on.

It’s “just a jig head”… until you look closer.
👉 Tungsten flat-face head (1/5 & 1/10 oz are my favorite) shows up on FFS 90–100 ft out, and when I let it fall to the bottom, the hook stands straight up like it’s showing off.
👉 Double barbed keeper = crawlers and plastics stay put, even on bomb casts.
👉 Pro V hook = a triple-sided point that sticks, plus a bend that keeps fish buttoned.

They come in a handful of colors, but let’s be real—you’ll only need one… black. 🖤

If I put this hook in a walleye’s mouth—even way out there—I’ve got zero doubt it’s making a boat appearance.

I’ve had the chance to put this whitewater gear through the ringer this spring. Im not saying it’ll keep you dry and comfortable during a tornado, but it will keep you dry and comfortable in the 40 mph wind the day after a tornado. This Great Lakes pro rain gear is money. Also if anyone wonders how the fish react the day after an evening tornado on lake Mac…..they’re hangry! We smacked a bunch of shallow walleyes that day on spinnerbaits one of the better bites we’ve had for big ones in a short amount of time.

It’s that time of year, people are over winter. There’s still 15+” of ice on our beloved lake McConaughy. Unless we get some warm windy days soon most of our pre-spawn bite will be short to say the least. However, I’m still organizing tackle, respooling jig rods, and anxiously waiting open water. I predict with the low water levels fishing will be a bit better than the last few years. Time will tell.

Last season I spent a lot of time utilizing forward facing sonar to find and target walleyes. Traveling the country to fish different water bodies and utilize different presentations. This technology has completely changed the game. The ability to see fish in real time, target those fish individually and observe their reaction and behavior adds a whole new element to fishing.

If you’re interested in a change of pace from the same old trolling or traditional live bait tactics or just looking to learn a thing or two about this tech and how to utilize it in addition to mapping, 2D sonar and Side imaging to find and target fish this is a perfect opportunity. I’ve got humminbird MEGA live and Garmin livescope plus for a different brand perspective.
