The Leelanau Connection

The Leelanau Connection We are excited to announce The Leelanau Collective! The idea for TLC came out of nowhere and developed spontaneously.

The Leelanau Collective (TLC) first started when Sarah Landry Ryder (The Redheads), Michelle White (Cherry Works), and Annie McFarlane (Aurora Borealis Jewelry Design) sat around a table to discuss business strategies over coffee. The goal is to take local Leelanau businesses, businesses that produce local products with local ingredients in Leelanau, to the rest of the country. We want everyone to

experience the Leelanau the way we do. There are many businesses involved already - to name just a few, we have: Leelanau Lavender Breezes, Just Good Chocolate, Cece Chatfield, and several more. Our plan is to coordinate traveling trunk shows. Three to five Leelanau County businesses will be tangibly represented at each trunk show - which businesses will be chosen by the host. The other Leelanau businesses that are part of TLC will be represented via catalog at each show. Part of the proceeds of every show will be donated to The Leelanau Conservancy. The host will also get to choose an organization local to their area to donate another portion of proceeds from their show. Our hope is to travel around the country sharing Leelanau with everyone and to give back to our local community. If you're interested in hosting a trunk show or you're a Leelanau business that would like to be involved, message us!

Bags of Love Update:

This morning we dropped off 20 bags at two locations we felt they would be readily seen. Within 15 minutes 3 were taken, then within the hour all were gone from one location. We went past the other location and all 10 bags were still there, however we do not believe they would stay long.

We want to thank all who have donated! If we have missed you it is because you were stealth about it :) Jane Lang, Peggy Miller, Molly Grosvenor Berg, April Priest, Gwen Martin, Kashia Roth, Lisa Siddal, Mary Lou Landry, Joe Burda, Dorothy Petroskey, Becky Reynolds, and Adam Sleder.

It was really exciting to see bags disappear! So yes we will would like to do it again! We have enough to do another 20 Bags of Love! We are accepting donations at The Redheads until January 7th.

If you are interested here is the list of suggested needs:
Toilet paper Hand Wipes
Toothbrush/toothpaste Nail Clippers
Water Bottle Band Aids
Razor Chap Stick
Shaving Cream Cough drops, gum
Hat Gift Cards for food
Scarf Encouraging handwritten cards of love
Gloves Ramon Noodles in a cup
Socks Plastic knife, fork, spoon
Shampoo Kleenex Brush and or Comb
Conditioner Tampons
Soap Pads
Snacks Non-perishable foods

Here are just a few compelling reasons to consider joining our quest to spread compassion:
1. Over half a million people are homeless.
2. One quarter of homeless people are children.
3. Tens of thousands of veterans are homeless.
4. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness
among women.
5. Many people are homeless because they cannot afford rent.
6. There are fewer places for poor people to rent than before.
7. In the last few years millions have lost their homes.
8. One in five homeless people suffers from untreated severe
mental illness.
9. Cities are increasingly making homelessness a crime.

We are so in awe over the number of donations!! Michelle Vidergar White, the founder of Cherry Works, has been working to stuff the bags and we've learned a few things, the most important being we need more non-perishable FOODS that can be easily eaten without too much hassle. Eg. Cup-o-noodles, packets of chicken salad or tuna, Brunswick brand boxes of chicken salad and crackers. We also need more TOILET PAPER! We'd like every bag to get a roll.
Thank you for all the donations of LOVE and we look forward to getting a few more of food and tp before the end!
PS listen for Sarah Landry Ryder and Michelle on Vic McCarty's show on 102.3 tomorrow between 10 and noon talking about Bags of Love!!

Bags of Love was born December 2014 when I was cleaning out a closet full of Trade Show bags and
hotel toiletries.

I thought why not make up bags full of all kinds of items a homeless or recently
displaced person may find comforting during a time of scarcity and fear.

But I wasn't sure what to do
with them once they were filled. I had filled 15 bags. The day I made them I told my good friend Annie
about them and without batting an eye she said "I will take them to town and distribute them at
midnight!" And she did! We couldn't wait to do it again!
Annie in loving memory... these bags will carry on as you inspired me to take and idea and make it happen!

Here are just a few compelling reasons to consider joining our quest to spread compassion:

7. In the last few years millions have lost their homes.
8. One in five homeless people suffers from untreated severe mental illness.
9. Cities are increasingly making homelessness a crime.

I have 25 bags to fill. Will you join me in an adventure of spreading compassion?!

Sarah Ryder has graciously volunteered to help! We are collecting donations at the Redheads to assemble for a New Years Eve Drop off throughout Traverse City. Please drop off any donations by December 29th. This is a new project so we will distribute the bags this year to learn options for future years.

Below is a list of needed items but please feel free to add anything you think would make a person feel a
little better because someone took the time to love them.

Toilet paper Hand Wipes
Toothbrush/toothpaste Nail Clippers
Water Bottle Band Aids

Hat Gift Cards for food
