It’s been a while, but this little fellow has been sitting in my pile for too long! You already know what time it is, FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!!
FFF: Red-headed Woodpecker Edition
📉These stunning birds have been experiencing a population decline, although they were once common across Eastern USA. Some threats may be nesting cavity competition with starlings and car strikes as they hunt insects (in addition to habitat loss).
🚨These birds are often confused with red bellied woodpeckers (which also sport red heads) but lack the entire, neck up brilliance that earned these birds the true title of red-head.
👀They prefer forest edges or clearings/orchards/open pine woods. The only site I’ve seen them with any regularity is Carolina Beach State Park.
🥾Bird walks at CBSP are every third Wednesday from 8-10am! Meet at the marina and plan for a leisurely 2 mile walk if you’d like to get a chance to glimpse these beauties along with other beautiful birds!
That’s all for now folks, happy birding!
