It’s been a while, but this little fellow has been sitting in my pile for too long! You already know what time it is, FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!!

FFF: Red-headed Woodpecker Edition

📉These stunning birds have been experiencing a population decline, although they were once common across Eastern USA. Some threats may be nesting cavity competition with starlings and car strikes as they hunt insects (in addition to habitat loss).

🚨These birds are often confused with red bellied woodpeckers (which also sport red heads) but lack the entire, neck up brilliance that earned these birds the true title of red-head.

👀They prefer forest edges or clearings/orchards/open pine woods. The only site I’ve seen them with any regularity is Carolina Beach State Park.

🥾Bird walks at CBSP are every third Wednesday from 8-10am! Meet at the marina and plan for a leisurely 2 mile walk if you’d like to get a chance to glimpse these beauties along with other beautiful birds!

That’s all for now folks, happy birding!

UPDATE: 2000 Magnificent Ramshorns reintroduced to the wild! (Article in stories)!

*repost from 7/16/2021*
FUN FACT FRIDAY edition! 🐌

The Magnificent Ramshorn (Planorbella magnifica)

🐌 Different from the common pet store ramshorn, these silver dollar sized, air breathing, freshwater snails are extinct in the wild.

🐌Historically, Magnificent Ramshorn Snails were only found in the Cape Fear River bottomland hardwood swamps. First existing in beaver ponds and later in mill ponds (artificial ponds created to grow rice).

🐌The continual dredging and deepening of the Cape Fear River has brought more and more saltwater in with each high tide resulting in “habitat collapse as a consequence of saltwater intrusion” -Andy Wood, CPCG Director

🐌These ‘Ghost Forests’ are all too common to Wilmingtonians. The collection of dead and sun bleached trees along our waterways are an eerie sight and they’re expanding at alarming rates!

🐌Due to habitat loss, these snails have been kept in captivity since 1992 with the last known habitat lost to saltwater intrusion in 2008. Hopefully, suitable habitats can be restored and these unique creatures can one day roam free again.

Road trip! 🚐 My family went on an adventure out West and we saw so many stunning canyons, flowers, trees, and animals we’ve never seen before like elk, jackrabbits and Joshua trees!

I was very excited to see the fire adapted western cousin of the longleaf…the ponderosa pine!

Can any herpers ID the desert lizard we kept seeing (slide 9)? These lizards were 3-4 inches, super fast and we saw 11 of them over the 3 days while camping at Red Rock Canyon, CA.

This trip was a much needed break from internets/news/school/jobs but if feels great to be back in NC with lush green all around! 💚

*all super bloom pics were taken from the path.

FFF: grass stage edition!!

🌱Baby longleaf trees actually look nothing like a tree. This ‘grass stage’ is unique among the southern pines.

⏳On the surface it just looks like a dense clump of needles. Longleaf can lay in wait in this form for 1-7 (even up to 20) years!

🔍These babies might not be showy on the surface, but they’re busy below growing a deep tap and building an extensive root system!

⚓️Another longleaf special: their tap roots are pretty much the same diameter as their trunks!!

🔥 Grass stage longleaf are very resilient to fire as their terminal bud is protected by the thick clump of needles, which grow back quickly after a fire.

🚀 When the conditions and resources are right, these trees take OFF, growing up to several feet in a few months so they can get those growing buds above the fire line.

You’ve gotta love this uniquely fire adapted tree!
