A few fun facts about cosmos 🌸
Cosmos might be one of the easiest flowers in my garden, but there’s more to these delicate blooms than meets the eye…
🌿 Their name comes from the Greek word kosmos, meaning order, harmony or a beautifully arranged world — a reference to their wonderfully symmetrical petals.
🌸 Cosmos are native to the Americas, particularly Mexico, and have been loved in gardens for centuries.
🐝 Bees, butterflies and other pollinators love them, making them as useful in the garden as they are beautiful.
✂️ The more you cut and deadhead many cosmos varieties, the more flowers they produce — which makes them wonderful for casual summer bouquets.
🌱 And perhaps my favorite thing about them: they don’t need particularly rich soil or lots of fussing. In fact, overly fertile soil can give you lots of foliage and fewer flowers.
By late summer, mine have usually gone from a few wispy little plants to a wonderfully unruly cloud of pinks and whites.
They’re not particularly tidy.
They lean into paths.
They mingle with their neighbors.
And somehow that makes me love them even more.
