Come see us at the Hay Creek Apple Festival!

Our Hay Creek Apple Festival & Flea Market will take place at Joanna Furnace on October 12 & 13, 2024! The event runs on Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 7 am to 3 pm.

This is a FREE event (parking donation requested).

Once again our Apple Festival will feature apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, apple fritters, caramel apples, hot mulled cider and the freshly pressed cider from the Joanna Furnace Cider Mill.

We will have a wide selection of festive food concessions available including Mabel’s kettle-cooked soups.

Also returning to our Apple Festival in 2024 is our Apple Pancake Breakfast with Sausage. Breakfast will be served in the Joanna Furnace Mule Stable from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. both days.

We will have fun for the whole family: Flea market, Hay Rides, Pumpkin Painting, Face Painting, our popular Apple Barrel Express Ride, and families can once again build a scarecrow at our event! (Scarecrow kits will be available to take home). Our apple baking contest will also be open for visitors on Saturday - more info on that in the near future.

Mark your calendars! We hope to see you there!

Did You Know? The History of the Middle Finger... Well, now...,.. here's something I never knew before, and now that I have come to know it, I feel compelled to share with my more intelligent friends in the hope that they too, will feel enlightened Isn't history more fun when you know something about it?
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew'), Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew!
Over the decades Americans have since changed up the words , the 'pluck yew' is now "f**K you" and the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.' And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing.
