Another Gunsmithing tip from the bench. I had a couple of guns come in for cleaning. Both of them had camouflage tape applied and both wanted it removed. They came off fairly easy but they were both hiding something. The “rust monster”was present. Cleaned them and knocked down the rust but it was a little too late, the rust started pitting the metal. So, what tip should I give? Don’t do it? Sure. Remove the tape after hunting season? Sure. Use a Camouflage sock? Probably. Any of those suggestions would help, but my opinion is to not use it at all.
If you have this same situation, I’ll be glad to help you out though.

So I thought I would post some “Gunsmithing Tips” that may help with those that follow this page that I see come across my bench. Some maybe informative and some maybe cheesy.
So, Gunsmithing tip #1. Those that store guns in a gun safe, (highly recommended) should be concerned about moisture. A good way of eliminating the issue is to add a dehumidifier inside. The ones I use are relatively cheap and the maintenance is to plug them in for a few hours and you’re done. You can get one for as low as $20 on Amazon.

It’s been busy the past few months getting fi****ms ready for last years deer season. Thanks to all that trusted me in their firearm needs. One thing that seems to be a popular request besides cleaning and repairing guns is “rust conversion”. What is this you ask? It’s a 5 step process that converts rust to bluing. I’ve done several this year with that patina finish (oiled rust) on hundred year old guns that basically brought back the finish 50 years. Not all guns are equal and not all covert very well. So, if you’ve got an old gun with patina, let me see if I can help you out.
On that same note, if you have a “newer” gun that has rust attacking the finish, I can knock down the built up of rust and at least stop the attack during a clean and oil job. Thanks!

Hey folks. I get a lot of calls asking questions about what SS Gunsmithing and Custom Fi****ms does and do not do. First and foremost, I perform general Gunsmithing tasks such as gun repairs, cleaning, wood restoration and repair. What seems to be a hot commodity, is restoring old pitted guns and applying DuraCoat applications. The things I don’t do is machine work, like threading barrels and milling operations. I do though, machine parts that are no longer available, if able. I get asked about selling guns and accessories. Absolutely not! I refuse to compete with those who help me. If your needed to purchase guns and accessories, I recommend Friendly Fi****ms on East 32 outside of Lebanon. If you still have questions, please contact me and hopefully I’ll answer your question. Thanks.

Beginning of a “modern “ restoration on this grand ol’ Wi******er Model 1906. More to follow…
Update, finally finished this project. The customer picked out the DuraCoat color, Mortor grey. As you can see the before pictures, the barrel and receiver was heavily pitted and rusted. Preparation took a while on the metal and inlaying the stock. I wouldn’t allow the customer to see the progress so he would be surprised. And was he!
