“The dog lives for the day, the hour, even the moment.” – Robert Falcon Scott. My takeaway is that timing is crucial when working with your dog. Pictured is Ivana, the owner of HDA, and her dog, Aura, perfectly timing the jump.

Here is another “dated” post from a few years ago. The info was gleaned from Dr. Arleigh Reynold’s power point presentation at the 2012 ADMA International Sled Dog Symposium.

Fun fact – VO2 max is defined as the highest rate of oxygen consumption attainable during maximal or exhaustive exercise. The average male aged 20-29 has a VO2 max of 44 to 51 and the average female aged 20-29 has a VO2 max of 35 to 43. Lance Armstrong's VO2 max was 85. The highest ever recorded VO2 max is 96 ml/kg/min, attributed to Bjørn Dæhlie. Elite sprint racing sled dogs have been tested and achieved a VO2 max of 240 ml/kg/min. Pictured is Kati Dagenais' champion sprint dog gulping in maximum oxygen. https://howlingdogalaska.com/collections/harnesses/products/light-weight-harness

Do you know the many types of racing sled dogs? This picture from a 2010 article represents the basics. The dogs continue to evolve: Alaskan sled dogs are a mixed breed dog selected strictly for their racing performance. A) Top row: Sprint racing teams of "traditional" Alaskan sled dogs (no purebred crossings in the last 5 generations) and Pointer crossed Alaskan sled dogs. Spandex dog coats (in blue) are commonly used on shorter-haired Pointer × Alaskan sled dogs when temperatures are ≤10'F. B) Middle row: Sprint sled dogs of 25% or greater Pointer ancestry according to their written pedigree records. C) Bottom row: "Traditional" Alaskan sled dogs from distance racing teams. All photos were taken between 2006-2009 of dogs competitively racing in high performance kennels. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2920855/
