Day 2 of 30 Days of Thankfulness
Today, I’m grateful for the seamstresses who have taught me—not only how to sew, but how to create with patience, confidence, and love.
I remember my mother on the living room floor, fabric spread all around her. She made Easter dresses, Christmas dresses, baptism dresses, and even my sister Andrea’s wedding dress. She sewed curtains and couch covers, and made puppets, too. Every Monday morning, she’d gather with friends around a quilting frame at church, catching up on life as they stitched blankets together, one tiny stitch at a time.
All the while, she showed my sisters and me that you could make so many things if you set your mind to it. She put scraps of fabric, pins, needles, and thread in my hands when I was very young. She taught me a simple hand stitch and how to use her sewing machine, then let me create alongside her. I made Barbie clothes, miniature blankets, quilts, and outfits for baby dolls.
As I grew older, I learned more in my eighth-grade Home Economics sewing class. Over the years, I’ve forgotten some of what I learned, but I’ve never lost the desire to sew, create, and get better.
John bought me a little sewing machine years ago. It’s inexpensive and sometimes temperamental, but I love it. With it, I’ve relearned how to hem pants and make Barbie clothes. And I still want to learn more. When a community program offered free sewing classes this fall, I jumped at the chance. It’s a basic class, but it’s exactly where I need to begin.
I can’t wait to move on to the intermediate class and learn from the wonderful women teaching us. I dream of making a quilt from the Halloween fat quarters I’ve collected, quilting like my mother, and tailoring clothes like a boss. I want to hem pants, sew a skirt, and do it all with straight seams and a smile on my face.
Today, I’m thankful for the seamstresses who have been part of my life—for their example, their guidance, and, most of all, for teaching me with love.
