On June 29, the Strawberry Moon rises with a soft pink glow, reflecting over calm water and blooming summer flowers. It feels romantic, peaceful, and full of warmth — the kind of moon that makes the evening feel slower and sweeter.

On July 29, the Buck Moon shines in golden light above rolling hills and wildflower fields. Its warm glow feels powerful and full of life, a reminder of growth, strength, and the beauty of long summer nights.

Maeve, or Medb, stands as one of the most powerful and divisive figures in Irish mythology.

Modern retellings often reduce her to jealousy or greed.

The old stories present something harder to dismiss.

Maeve was Queen of Connacht and ruled in her own right. She chose her husband, not the reverse. In some traditions, a king could not rule without union to sovereignty itself, and Maeve represented that force.

Then came the dispute.

Maeve discovered her husband possessed a great white bull that left him wealthier than her. Equal marriage was one of her conditions. She refused to stand beneath him in status.

So she did something mythology rarely forgives women for.

She went to war.

The result became the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the Cattle Raid of Cooley, one of Ireland’s great epics. Armies moved, alliances fractured, and the young hero Cú Chulainn stood against her forces.

People often ask whether Maeve was selfish.

Another question sits underneath.

Why are kings remembered as conquerors and queens remembered as excessive?

Maeve did not ask permission to rule.

She expected power to answer to her.

That expectation made her unforgettable.
