The eclipse starts at 9:23 p.m. ET on August 27 and peaks at 12:12 a.m. ET on August 28, when the moon reaches its most covered point, according to Time and Date.

North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the East Pacific all fall in the viewing zone, per NASA. That's the payoff of a lunar eclipse over a solar one: Earth's shadow lands across roughly half the planet at once, so no travel and no special equipment are needed to catch it.

It's the second of two August eclipses. A total solar eclipse crosses Greenland, Iceland, Spain, northern Russia, and parts of Portugal on August 12, with some U.S. states catching a partial version through certified eclipse glasses. Totality skips the U.S. entirely this time.

A lunar eclipse happens on the night of a full moon, when Earth moves between the sun and the moon and drops a shadow across its surface.
