A standout selection from a naturally occurring hybrid between S. ovata and S. serrata! Chosen by West Virginia plantsman Peter Heus, this compact, clump-forming perennial combines the best traits of both parents, producing spikes of large bicolor flowers in shades of violet-blue and white from late spring into summer. Dark green foliage accented by deep purple margins and maroon stems adds interest even when the plant is not in bloom. Adaptable to both sun and part shade, ‘Appalachian Blues’ thrives in well-drained soils and attracts bumblebees, butterflies, and other pollinators while remaining deer resistant. Unlike some skullcaps, it maintains a tidy, non-spreading habit, making it an excellent choice for woodland edges, pollinator gardens, native plantings, and mixed borders!
