Join us for an evening in the gallery as we have a conversational discussion about her work in the exhibition Astrological Effigies. From early inspirations, to crafting sock monkeys and the evolution of her soft sculpture + papercut works– we’ll dive into the detail! Questions are always welcome and light snacks will be served; we look forward to a fun time with our community!

ASTROLOGICAL EFFIGIES: New Works by Rebecca Adey

Commonly shown in Western Astrology as the celestial twins, Gemini is shown here as known in Native American culture, in the form of two deer. Rebecca shows their close relationship with a shared antler, binding the two together. Those under the sign of Gemini are considered to be highly social, intuitive, and graceful. The deer is a perfect symbol of these traits.

In Rebecca's sculpture, each deer maintains a personality all its own, and though connected, they seem at peace with their close relationship. The expressive quality of this piece and the subtle shift in gesture make it a stand out in a room of stand outs. We love the palette and meticulous attention to detail.

The latest in the Blackwing Volume collection, The Birding Pencil, features colorful gradient designs, inspired by one of four North American birds: the Clark’s Grebe, Mallard, Green Jay, and Black Rail. In a world constantly vying for our attention, birding asks us to simply be present. It reminds us there is beauty all around us, waiting to be discovered. As amateur birders ourselves, we love these new pencils and the Volume 458 Zine that accompanies them!

Documenting Impermanence: New Drawings by Candace Greenberg-Thompson

Opening First Friday, September 4th from 5:00-8:00pm

The drawings in this collection demonstrate a mind that is still able to be mesmerized. Plant forms that bend and distort behind curtains that catch the breeze, acting as ships' sails- or movie screens, capturing overlapping shadowplays that create moving abstractions. Tonal shifts of such nuanced delicacy that they feel softer than the fabrics they depict. Rich passageways and bridges of heavy darkness that span pools of intense light manage to simultaneously give the sense of deep space, and two dimensional surface. Candace displays her mastery with the pencil and pushes the medium into the deep end of its capability.

Meet Rebecca as we discuss her early inspirations, as well as her meticulous process from sketch to playing with color choices and the final assembly of both her papercut and soft sculpture works. Questions and conversation are always welcome, light snacks will be served!

Hi curio friends, Nicole here to share it’s Matt’s birthday! He shines bright as an artist, teacher, leader, and creative problem solver. His work behind the scenes at the shop and gallery is instrumental- building our exhibition curatorial statements, hanging the shows, workshop programming, and getting you excited about our favorite materials in the store. It’s easy to feel energized and inspired when around him. Let’s wish Matt a fantastic day, and year ahead!

We’ve been adding supplies for the young artists who shop with us since reopening in our Prince Street home! From pads of paper to fill cover to cover, colored pencils that double as a brush for watercolors, kaleidoscope crayons and pencils, clay that doesn’t dry up, and paint sticks that clean up easily– there are some playful materials to choose from!
