Pocket Books is thrilled to invite you to an evening at Zoetropolis exploring the horrific beauty of 'beauty horror,' a subgenre that merges glamour and the grotesque to examine our culture's obsession with aesthetic perfection.

Join us at 6pm for a talk with award-winning horror maven Alma Katsu (author of The Hunger, The Fervor, Fiend, and more), whose new book Incarnate offers a terrifying reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray for the internet age. Failed influencer Dorothy takes a job working for a brilliant coder whose company is focused on creating cutting-edge deepfake technology, which Dorothy realizes she can use to create Isabella, an impossibly gorgeous, unbelievably perfect girl who quickly dominates social media; when someone starts asking too many questions about Isabella's meteoric rise to fame, Dorothy must confront just how far she's willing to go to keep her beautiful, terrible secret. You won't want to miss our talk with Alma about the intersections of beauty, horror, and feminism, followed by audience q&a and a book signing. At 7:30pm, we'll enjoy a screening of Coralie Fargeat's celebrated 2024 film The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which follows a fading actress who will go to any lengths to return to a younger and more beautiful version of herself. Secure your seat by purchasing a ticket through Zoetropolis!

Pocket Books will have Alma Katsu's books available for purchase at the event, but attendees are encouraged to order in advance and can use code PREORDER for 15% off Incarnate before its publication on 9/22/26.

glowing, enthusiastic rec from austin: It's not often that a book makes me cry not as an emotional reaction to plot but for the sheer joy of loving the reading experience, but TAKE WHAT YOU CAN had tears streaming down my face as I said "You NEED to read this book" with increasing urgency at everyone who walked by. The novel follows Val and Milly, two best friends who met as the only Black women on a college study-abroad trip to France and whose lives have taken a circuitous path back to one another as they prepare for the births of their first children. A lot has changed since those heady days in France, and it's unclear if their friendship can withstand the strain of disparate financial realities, marriage tension, impending motherhood when neither has had a mother of her own in decades, and a traumatic rift they've sworn they've moved past but that nonetheless demands to be faced. Naima Coster's prose dazzles, and readers will find themselves rooting for Val and Milly even as they refuse to be agreeable or considerate or selfless but insist, again and again, on being undeniably human.

TAKE WHAT YOU CAN is the perfect end-of-summer book & a gorgeous look at a complicated friendship marked by jealousy and grief and true, desperate love. This beauty skyrocketed to my 'favorite books of 2026' list within the first 50 pages and refuses to be unseated. Grab a copy today!

Sarah rec! 💛 THE HEIRS by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is the next murder mystery you will stay up till 2am reading! With the tone of a Knives Out mystery and the vibes of The Umbrella Academy, you are going to dive in head first. This book features five prodigies, one dead father, a mansion full of suspects… and I won't say any more! I am such a huge fan of an ensemble cast, and these sibling dynamics are addictive. If you are a former gifted kid needing catharsis or just need to take a minute to commiserate on the weight of burnout, this needs to be your next read!

Sarah review!

Not to sensationalize, but the best irreverent fantasy I've read this year just released! THE DUNGEON BOOK by Gareth Hanrahan has the vibes of THE STINKY CHEESE MAN AND OTHER FAIRLY STUPID TALES crossed with the setting of Baldur's Gate 3 and DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL. I was hooting and hollering the whole way through— When I saw the author was primarily a TTRPG writer, no part of me was surprised. If you trust me (and even if you don't), this stand-alone fantasy novel is a must read.
—
Bait doesn't remember a time before the dungeon. She doesn't know what her name was before she was handed over to the monstrous denizens of the dungeon beneath the sorcerer's tower. Luckily for Bait, they decided not to eat her immediately (it was a close call). As the outside world starts to intrude, Bait will learn what it means to really be monstrous.

Avery review!

For a book so small, she packs a punch! GOOD MORNING MEANS I LOVE YOU centers around Rae, who returns to her family— her two partners and their sons Morning and Night—after a stretch apart following the traumatic birth of her last child. As she reintegrates into her family, spending time with her children and learning how they all fit together again, she reflects on the choices that led her to this moment, both those she made and those made for her.

The beauty of this novel cannot be overstated! From the poetic prose to the intimate portrayals of familial and romantic relationships, Kendra Allen had me floored. The book explores everything from happiness to motherhood, freedom, loss, and of course, family and how they shape us. I fully teared up at least twice reading this, while also experiencing some laugh-out-loud moments. The emotional rollercoaster got me good.

So, if you’re looking for a quick but powerful read, look no further than GOOD MORNING MEANS I LOVE YOU.

Thank you again to our Pocket Books community for rounding up at the register to support the Lancaster Neighbor Fund! Every single cent adds up -- since February, the PB community has raised over $4,000 for our neighbors in need. Your 'spare change' has a real, material effect for people in our community being targeted by ICE. The best part of our month is tallying up the donations and sending LNF a check -- the work they do is so necessary, and it's an honor to be able to facilitate it in any way!
