Pocket Books is thrilled to invite you to an evening at Zoetropolis exploring the horrific beauty of 'beauty horror,' a subgenre that merges glamour and the grotesque to examine our culture's obsession with aesthetic perfection.
Join us at 6pm for a talk with award-winning horror maven Alma Katsu (author of The Hunger, The Fervor, Fiend, and more), whose new book Incarnate offers a terrifying reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray for the internet age. Failed influencer Dorothy takes a job working for a brilliant coder whose company is focused on creating cutting-edge deepfake technology, which Dorothy realizes she can use to create Isabella, an impossibly gorgeous, unbelievably perfect girl who quickly dominates social media; when someone starts asking too many questions about Isabella's meteoric rise to fame, Dorothy must confront just how far she's willing to go to keep her beautiful, terrible secret. You won't want to miss our talk with Alma about the intersections of beauty, horror, and feminism, followed by audience q&a and a book signing. At 7:30pm, we'll enjoy a screening of Coralie Fargeat's celebrated 2024 film The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which follows a fading actress who will go to any lengths to return to a younger and more beautiful version of herself. Secure your seat by purchasing a ticket through Zoetropolis!
Pocket Books will have Alma Katsu's books available for purchase at the event, but attendees are encouraged to order in advance and can use code PREORDER for 15% off Incarnate before its publication on 9/22/26.
