A major federal appeals court recently ruled that New Jersey’s restrictions on covered semiautomatic rifles and magazines violated the Second Amendment.

That is an important national development—but it did not automatically change New York law.

New York’s current firearm and magazine restrictions remain in effect while related cases continue moving through the courts. The United States Supreme Court is expected to address similar semiautomatic-rifle restrictions during its upcoming term.
