Kit homes in Lake Orion! For a first-time or middle-class buyer in the early 1900s, buying a kit house (via catalogs from Sears, Roebuck & Co. or Aladdin Homes) was generally much easier and far more affordable than hiring a local architect and builder for a fully custom "build new" project.

From the 1916 Sears Home Catalog. They shipped the entire house to you by railroad car. Sears was like Ikea before Ikea. Friends and family would come from all around to help the owner build it. From 1908 to 1942, Sears sold more than 70,000 of these houses in North America, by the company's count. Sears Modern Homes offered more than 370 designs in a wide range of architectural styles and sizes over the line's 34-year history. Most included the latest comforts and conveniences available to house buyers in the early part of the twentieth century, such as central heating, indoor plumbing, telephone, and electricity. Primarily shipped via railroad boxcars, these kits included most of the materials needed to build a house. Once delivered, many of these houses were assembled by the new homeowner, relatives, friends and neighbors, in a fashion similar to the traditional barn-raisings of farming families. Sears discontinued its Modern Homes catalog after 1940, though sales through local sales offices continued into 1942. Years later, the sales records related to home sales were destroyed during a corporate house cleaning. As only a small percentage of these homes were documented when built, finding these houses today often requires detailed research to properly identify them.-Courtesy Trey Ellis

These kit cottages were also sold by Lake Orion Lumber. Precut pieces were pulled by horses across the ice in the winter and were built in the spring. Below is a link to the Sears catalog of kit houses. In the 1930s these cost around $1097 ($27,000 today).

Did you know that Lake Orion once operated on a "moonlight schedule"? 🌙⚡

Back in the early 1900s, power was a bit different here! Before Detroit Edison took over in 1912, the Orion Light and Power Company generated electricity for the village using small, local coal and hydroelectric generators. To save energy, they famously shut off the streetlights whenever the moon was shining bright enough to light the way.

It was also a time of major transit connections. The Detroit United Railway (DUR) interurban trolley system—which connected Lake Orion to Detroit, Flint, and Rochester—relied on electrical substations along the route to power its trolleys. These weren't just for electricity, though; they served as vital freight drop-off points for local farmers, too.

A fascinating look back at how our community kept the lights on (and the trolleys running) over a century ago!

Postcard from June 1910.
197 S. Broadway Street in downtown Lake Orion will become Clover & Creek Restaurant formerly Oat Soda.

Bald Mountain was named Ball Mountain
"Stagecoaches had a regular route through the township. The regular coach stop was an Inn on Bald Mountain, situated on a curve in the road. The passengers would disembark to rest and dine before going on through the Toll Gate north of the Inn.
Bald Mountain was originally called Ball Mountain because the hill was owned by a farmer named Ball. The barren crest of the hill caused the name to evolve into Bald Mountain."

Simple, fun, and provides hours of laughter. This DIY project comes with predrilled holes and screws to build an Orion Squirrel picnic table.
"Lake Orion Where Living is a Vacation" decoration is engraved onto the wood so they know where they live of course!?
Once assembled, screw an ear of corn onto the corn screw. Place table in an area high enough that squirrels like to feed and enjoy watching these fuzzy creatures eat like "civilized" animals.
Corn not included but can be purchased at your local feed store.
All pieces packaged in a 9.5" x 8.25" x 5.5" box with thorough instructions. A fun project for youth and adults!
