Six years ago we lost The Architect of Rock And Roll. In the mid 90’s, I had a connecting flight in Houston. I looked over at the terminal next to me and there was a tall black guy in a purple suit surrounded by what looked to be an entourage. I did a double take and sure enough, it was Little Richard. I had one of his anthologies on heavy rotation at the time and he had a children’s record out which my kids were listening to, so I had to take a shot at saying hello.

His bodyguards bristled a little but I walked up, shook his hand and said; “Richard, I’m Steve. I’m sorry to bother you but I’m a big fan and I just wanted to say hello.” He couldn’t have been more kind. We talked for a while about his kids record (which I had memorized at his point) & how much my family enjoyed it & he said “God bless you, please give your family my best.” He was real, no flamboyance or put on, just a genuine nice guy. As I excused myself, he shook my hand again and quickly gave me an autographed photo and a religious book he had written.

Arguably Tedeschi Trucks is the best band in the business. Expert players at every position, 3 piece chorus beautifully harmonizing with the players, a killer horn section. Tedeschi plays like Buddy Guy and sounds like a young Bonnie Raitt and Dereck Trucks is the best all around guitarist since Duane Allman. They can play anything and all effortlessly. What’s better? Throw in legendary Meters bassist George Porter Jr. and a Sly Stone song and you got magic.
