Yesterday was the birthday of my beloved sister Sherry Bretz. Sherry was abused at a nursing home in Ohio, finally dying at the hospital where she worked for 28 years as an RN. She had Alzheimer’s disorder, and had numerous very bad dark blue bruises on her face and arms. I believe that she was murdered. She was the kindest person that I have ever known. I hope that she was able to find Mom and Dad in Heaven. Also there were Auntie Arloween, Uncle Gene, Auntie Dorothy, Uncle Kite, and a lot of Aunties and Uncles from the Bretz side of the family. I hope all of them were able to get together to celebrate your birthday Sherry.

Coming to the end of an epic year for tuna here in So. Cal. I really wish that I could have fished a little more than I was able to. Check out the pictures below and you’ll see why. I’ve built a number of “rail rods” to fish for the really jumbo bluefin tuna. There were a number of super cows (300+ lbs.) as well as cows (200+ lbs.) caught within the area from the Mexican boarder North to the Channel Islands of San Clemente, Santa Catalina and San Nicholas. During the slack times in the tuna bite, the bottom fishing was great for reds, whitefish, lingcod and bocaccio. At times the yellowtail bite was good but not consistent.

It’s been a great year for fishing in Southern California! We had giant bluefin tuna up to over 300 lbs, yellowtail fishing like the good ‘ol days with limit style fishing at the Coronado Islands and mossbacks at San Clemente Island some over
40 lbs, and calico bass fishing inshore at the kelp beds with a lot of them not over the 14 inch minimum and some really nice calicos at the Islands. The yellowfin tuna were mostly south in Mexican waters but a few days of them in local offshore waters. There were good numbers of rockfish and they actually bit sometimes. Pelagic red crabs were the problem. Rockfish were stuffed with them.

The wide-open full speed yellowtail bite continues at the Coronado Islands. Most fish are around the 8-10 lb range with some up to 15 lbs. Mixed in are a few bluefin tuna in the 15-25 lb class. The dorado seem to have gone elsewhere. Still yellowtail on kelp patties mostly 20 lb+. I fished the Coronados last week and had a limit by 9:30AM. I was on the San Diego from Seaforth Sportfishing and we limited out. What a professional operation! We had 53 onboard and the crew handled it nicely.
