That hum? It might be part of the tone.

If you’ve spent any time with a single-coil guitar, you know the sound , that unmistakable 60-cycle hum sitting underneath everything.

For decades, it’s been part of the sound of electric guitar. Hendrix had it. Clapton had it. Countless records we love have it.

You can chase silence, add shielding and clean things up… but sometimes the better move is to stop fighting the guitar and let it sound like a guitar.

A little volume roll-off when you need it. Full character when you don’t.

Some noise. A lot of soul. ⚡

Filmed at The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach, where vintage guitars, great tone and decades of guitar knowledge still matter.

What guitar did you NOT expect to like… until you played it? 🎸
We asked Brendon, Bill & Ben from The Guitar Shoppe which guitar caught them completely by surprise.
A vintage Harmony Stratotone H44. A Gretsch Duo Jet. A Heritage.
Sometimes it’s the guitar you’d normally walk right past that ends up being the one you can’t put down.
What guitar surprised you the first time you played it? 👇

Same guitar. Different wood. Completely different voice.
The Martin 000-18 and 000-28 are nearly identical in size, feel, and craftsmanship. The biggest difference comes down to the tonewoods. The 000-18 features mahogany back and sides for a dry, focused sound with strong midrange. The 000-28 is built with East Indian rosewood, offering deeper bass, sparkling highs, and a richer harmonic response.
When everything else is nearly the same, you can truly hear how the wood shapes the guitar’s personality.
Which one would you choose?
Stop by The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach and play them side by side. Sometimes the right guitar isn’t about specs—it’s about the one that inspires you the moment you hear it. 🎸

I walked up to Anson and asked one simple question:
“What’s the #1 thing people should look for when buying a used guitar?” 🎸
His answer might save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars.
Most people focus on scratches, colors, or the brand. The real deal-breakers are the things you can’t easily fix:
✔️ A healthy neck
✔️ Good frets
✔️ A working truss rod
✔️ A solid bridge (especially on acoustics)
✔️ Electronics that actually work
Tuners? Easy to replace.
A warped neck or lifting bridge? That’s a completely different story.
Whether you’re buying your first guitar or adding another one to the collection, these are the things worth checking before you hand over your money.
What’s the best used guitar deal you’ve ever found? Drop it in the comments. 👇

🎸 A 10-Second Fix Every Guitarist Should Know
There are few things worse than losing your signal in the middle of a song.
Before you assume a cable has failed or your guitar needs a repair, check the connections. A little electronic contact cleaner can often bring noisy jacks, scratchy pots, and unreliable switches back to life in seconds.
It’s one of those simple things Ben has kept in his gig bag for years because sometimes the smallest tool saves the entire performance.
Whether you’re playing live every weekend or just plugging in at home, keeping your electronics clean is one of the easiest ways to avoid unnecessary problems.
Have you ever had a guitar cut out in the middle of a set? Tell us what happened.
