🌸 Revisit: Meet the Maker Monday 🌸
Today we're revisiting a special story behind a beautiful work by Gallery 102 artist Vanessa May.
🎨 Peonies (Master Copy Study)
"This painting began as a college project where we were asked to create a master copy of a famous work. I chose Manet's Peonies because peonies have always reminded me of my granny. She grew them in her yard every spring, and when I started this piece, I had recently lost her. Spending time painting those flowers brought me comfort and helped me feel close to her again.
As I worked on the vase, something unexpected appeared. In the reflections and water, I began to see the faint image of a woman holding an umbrella, almost as if she were standing inside the glass. It wasn't intentional, but once I noticed it, I couldn't ignore it. To me, it felt like my granny was there beside me, guiding my hand and reminding me she was proud.
What began as a class assignment became something much more meaningful — a tribute to love, memory, and the connections that remain with us long after our loved ones are gone. Every time I look at this painting, I still see her watching over me."
Art has a remarkable way of preserving memories, telling stories, and keeping those we cherish close to our hearts. Thank you, Vanessa, for sharing both your talent and this touching story with us.
