Friends, I've made the difficult decision to close my shop indefinitely. I've loved sharing my joy of sustainable fashion that I encapsulated in my vision of The Local Edit over this past year, and I so cherish the new friendships that I was so lucky to have made along the way...
It's amazing how in just a matter of months, one's point of view on life and purpose can shift. There's a beautiful Japanese idealogy called "Ikigai," which seeks to break down and define one's purpose in life by asking oneself basic questions about loving their craft, impacting the world, and finding what one is good at (there’s a making money bit in there too, which is nice, but I haven’t really figured that one out yet.) the important thing to know is that love part comes first. ❤️..
I realize, especially now, that it's a luxury to have a choice in what one chooses to do with their time. For me, it's a privilege that comes with a responsibility to make impactful change not only within my own family and community but in broader social justice and equity efforts in ways where I know I can make the most impact. I'm excited to pursue these efforts and though I'm sad to let my Local Edit baby go, I'm looking forward to this next stage in life...
I don't know how to close this, so I'll just say, please continue to shop locally and please hit up your favorite consignment shop in town (like in Orinda if you’re local)...

Muting until it feels right not to. Now is the time to listen, learn, support and do. the. work. NOT just for today, but everyday as we each move forward to find our role in affecting real systematic change in our very broken system; in our country that was forged in inequality; in our society that doesn’t unilaterally honor its “contract” to its people (thank you for illustrating that concept Trevor Noah.)

Its not enough for us white people to feel sad and guilty and sorry. It’s going to require listening, humble reflection and actual work to make sure we don’t only act during these times we are faced with overt acts of racism but after, when the news cycle has moved on. When for some of us, life goes on. We do this only by recognizing that our skin color affords us the privilege not to live in fear every day and by accepting our own implicit biases and actively opposing them. .

I hope to continue to amplify the voices of black influencers, business owners and other POC who can help lead us to do better. I’m listening. I’m ready to work. *comments off*

These days, we’re all likely spending more time in social media than we’re generally used to. I know many of us are being inundated with huge sales from big brands trying to offload inventory, and I do hope many of you, if you do find the urge to shop, are considering second-hand or at least shopping through your local small boutiques that are taking such a massive hit through this pandemic.

Today, I thought I’d share some tips on spotting fake brands and too-good-to-be-true on-trend clothing deals that are flooding Insta. A little digging into some of these brands you’ve never heard of, will show some surprising things....
1. Deja-vu: Yep, it’s not just your quarantined mind playing tricks on you. Many of these so-called brands use the same product images across brands. Different name, similar deal, same garbage.
#2. So...how long have you been in business??: Quick research into these brand accounts show many started in March. Hmmm...🤨
3. If you build it they will come: Really? 10K with zero accounts they are following... This is usually the first tell-tale sign of a fake brand. A quick scroll of comments will show a trickle of comments that don’t reflect the numbers. Always a sign of fake followers.
4. Made in China: Yep, definitely not local. A drill-down on where the account originated from will tell you most of these accounts originated in China. Shocker.
So what’s the harm of trying one of these brands out? Those adorable cutoffs for $28 are so dang cute, why not just give em a go? The answer is that besides the fact that what you see is so often not what you get (the ole bait and switch), you as a consumer are contributing to the cycle of , which is generally defined by the rapid production of cheaply made, trendy clothing often made with hugely negative environmental impacts and through supply chains that offer little oversight to ethical hiring practices. The impact on our environment is massive and contributes to fashion as the world’s “second largest polluter of clean water” after agriculture. [source: for ]

It’s pouring rain, spirits are low and all I want to do is reassure the kids (and myself) that everything’s going to be ok and we’re going to return to normal soon.
I KNOW there’s no “normal” to come back to in the same way, at least not for a while. Even as we begin to re-renter society again, the direct and indirect impact on businesses and individuals are going to take months and maybe years to recover from.

So is it ok to pretend everything is ok and glibly carry on as if it is? No, I don’t think so. But I do think there’s some sort of balance to strike in trying in carrying on; in finding humor in the corners of darkness, and in showering once and a while and putting on a pretty dress.
So here I am. I don’t like mirror selfies. They make me feel uncomfortable and weirdly self-possessed. But I’m going to try to extend myself outside of my comfort zone a bit, and I’m going to try to navigate this strange space of sharing my clients’ pieces with you all in the hopes they provide some light and levity to what most certainly is the strangest and most trying time in our collective memories.
So with that said, if you like this pretty dress (and yes, I’m aware there isn’t a place to wear it other than your living room at the moment) then tap the post for product info and purchasing. I’ll ship it for free to you, or I’ll deliver at no cost if you’re local. You can also check out my stories for more✨.
