This piece was a true labor of love. I started this piece in January of 2023, wanting to devote the whole year to creating my biggest piece yet. It ended up taking longer than planned, but I am so in love with the end result. I can stare at this piece for hours and I keep discoving new little details. While I love this piece, I am also so happy to have finished it and have the piece out of my mind. I'm excited to start on new weaving projects, though probably nothing so intricate for a long time.

Coming in at 36in, and weighing about 9lbs, I've lost track of how many different fibers went into this piece, but it is definitely the result of 3 years of fiber hoarding.

While I haven't done a lot of weaving lately, I've been knitting up a storm, so here we go!

I've been absolutely loving this suri with Killarney NP yarn from . I even wore it for St. Patrick's Day last week.

While I'm working away on the 2nd (even bigger) tide pool piece, I thought I would share the original one in it's natural habitat.

These were actually the very tide pools that inspired this piece. We have a lot of different ones in San Diego, so I'm going to try and capture the feel of them in these pieces.

Tide Pool #1
I tend to be a very intuitive weaver. I follow what I'm feeling, what the fibers want to do, rarely do I follow a real plan all the way through. This piece was one of those perfect times, where I had an idea, 'I want to make a tide pool', and the idea just flowed. This is the biggest intricate piece I've ever made, with over 60 different fibers wanted their turn to play. I started this piece during creative hangout, and just kept working on it, and finished it within 24 hours. And it is one of my favorite pieces. Everything just fell into place. I hid so many little details in this tide pool, that I keep staring at it and discover new little things every time I do.

The 'problem' with the way I approach my art is that it is very hard to replicate. I can rarely capture the same magic as I did the first time, but here's to hoping that more of these pieces can be created, because I have big dreams for this collection.

Andromeda

Every winter gray whales make the trip from Alaska to the warm waters of Baja California to give birth. On their way they make their way past San Diego. One year we were lucky enough to see a whale just of the coast, here in La Jolla.
This piece is a memory of that beautiful day.

A super fun landscape commission highlighting the cliffs and endemic flowers of Guam.
Commissions are so much fun because I get to try out new techniques, like wet felting for the flowers here.

Here's the rainbow piece from my story sneak peek this week.
I started this piece in 's Color Creative Retreat (funnily enough only worked on the white and black part), but I love how each hoop has its own base tones, but still in the rainbow.

This piece as well as 4 other weavings and 6 new yarns are now listed in my shop!

Spring is just around the corner, our flowers are starting to bloom and the weather's warming up, so it was time to make a fun little blooming piece (avaliable).

Favorite

Some pieces are favorites because of the people they were created for, others because of the subject matter of the weaving, and others for the joy and happiness I had in my life at the time of creation. Every piece I make contains a piece of me, my emotions at the time of making the piece, my thoughts.

3 things ... I make in my business

1) Framed fiber art, whether in a hoop, frame or unique shape, I love to create these self-contained pieces.

2) Wall hangings, the first things I wove, and my favorite style for landscape, a full fringe adds a level of drama and freedom.

3) Art yarn. The basis for every unique weaving, I spin bulky art yarn from handcarded batts and handdyed braids.

Day 1: You & your work

This month, I'm going to try and do March Meet The Maker and let you all get to know me a little better.

My name is Athina and I'm the creator behind AthinaWeavings. I'm currently working on my PhD in Oceanography in San Diego, California. Last week was actually the 2 year anniversary of making my first weaving.

At the time, I was going through a particularly difficult time in my PhD. I was even thinking about leaving my program and pursuing a different path, but I'm so happy I was able to work my way through it and have been loving the research I've been doing since then.

Since then, weaving and spinning yarn have quickly become my almost daily companions in this journey. I've taken inspiration from my research, the diverse surroundings of California, and from the yarn and fibers themselves.
