We're plenty busy, but we wanted to mention a very interesting collaborative project!

This Weril baritone came in with some unique but worn down valve guides. Not being able to get replacements, we reached out to Red Wing's instrument repair program about designing and 3D printing a suitable replacement.

Instructor John Huth worked with a repair student to fabricate brand new valve guides to keep the pistons in alignment. Below, you can see the original compared to the newly printed guide.

The ingenuity and creative process from this duo will keep this horn working and student musicians playing for quite some time. We are so grateful to work with our alma mater on such an interesting project!

We're closing out the clinic season with a truly wonderful experience. This past weekend, repair techs Brianne, Aaron, and Ches attended NAPBIRT's 50th national conference in Normal, IL.

This organization (the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians) holds an annual conference and various regional clinics throughout the year to help technicians refine their skills.

During the conference, we attended lectures and worked in hands-on classes lead by outstanding technicians in our field. Some topics included are clarinet voicing by Morrie Backun, professional flute repair, trombone slide repair, 3D printing in the repair industry, rotor and valve work, oboe repair, part and tool machining, and so much more!

We're settling back into the shop with full hearts and minds spinning and are ready-to-go as the busy season approaches!

Another busy weekend! We are truly honored to help sculpt the minds of new repair techs.

This past Friday and Saturday, Brianne returned to her alma mater in repair to assist student assessments and participate in a Q&A panel where students can pose pose questions to experienced techs out in the field.

She also co-presented a clinic with one of the school's repair instructors on tonehole leveling and surgeries.

For all the clinics and mentorship we've sought out to improve our own work, it's an amazing opportunity to continue passing on the gift of knowledge to others to learn and grow from.

Keep tuned to see what other neat opportunities are on the horizon. In the meantime, we've got some instruments to work on! 😉

Another exciting stop Brianne made last week was visiting the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD!

This beautiful collection of instruments spans centuries and cultures and is a sight to behold. There are some unusual instrument designs that delight music lover and instrument technician alike, with some looking like they came straight from a Dr. Seuss book.

The biggest highlight, however, was stumbling across their beautiful gamelan display, which happened to be being used for a rehearsal at the time.

If you're as big a fan of music and instruments as we are, you need to visit!

We're keeping our minds sharp and our passion strong!

This weekend, Brianne traveled to Sioux City, IA to attend Western Iowa Technical and Community College's regional repair clinic. Six wonderful technicians presented on topics such as wood crack repair, mini magnets for de-denting brass horns, basic string repair, and several about mindfulness and addressing the mental hurdles of this profession.

It's always an inspiring experience meeting others with a passion for this craft and getting the chance to connect and learn from them.

This wasn't the only stop Brianne made however! Keep turned for another update of some unusual instruments to marvel at.

Success!

Following up on our oboe key stew, the stuck screw has dissolved enough to be removed from the key. Now we can clean and polish the tarnished key, replace the screw, and make the final adjustments needed to make this horn sing!

Hands-on experience is most of what we do here in repair, but sometimes we get to have some fun with chemistry. 😎

What's cooking??? On the shop menu today we have an oboe key!

This key had an adjustment screw locked firmly in place preventing us from regulating some keys. Penetrating oil, heat, and some patience usually do the trick to free up stubborn parts but no luck here! So instead we are immersing the key in a hot chemical solution that will dissolve ferrous metal and leave the key itself and the threads intact so that we can replace the screw.
Check back in with us and see how this dish turns out after a long simmer!

We're breaking up our usual flow of repairs with some less common visitors! A bassoon and bass recorder came in separately for a little attention each. It's always fun to have a little variety!

After three intense days, Brianne spent Saturday fabricating a bass clarinet key and enjoying a live streamed repair clinic as she worked.

The hard work is well worth it though. Exciting news is on the horizon. Stay tuned!
