🌺Grower's Picks, Part Three🌺

In this final installment of the series leading up to Spring Organic Market on May 9, grower John Long is here to spotlight ornamentals.

John has been working on expanding this year's selection, which will feature many popular perennials like coneflower and iris. But, he says, "don't forget about the summer annuals, which give you a lot of bang for your buck and a ton of bloom. Although they develop slowly over the early-season cold and wet, once summer hits, they come into their own and give you carefree flowering for months."

🌼Gomphrena: "Ranging in color from white to dark-red and purple, gomphrena offer an abundance of small flowers and are terrific accents whether used sparingly or in large drifts."

🌼Salvia: "The annual salvias thrive in the heat and are highly drought resistant. They are also pollinator favorites."

🌼Rudbeckia: "The annual rudbeckias put on a beautiful, reliable display of large daisies—from yellow and gold to earth-tone reds—and are a showstopper in any flower bed."

John plants these ornamentals on the farm—and he's also growing them for Spring Organic Market so you can try them in your own garden this year!

Staff at St. Luke's-Rodale Institute Organic Farm in recently hosted more than 25 chefs for a day of discovery. Farm Manager Lisa Miskelly and crew offered the chefs a full-circle view of the farm—from greenhouse, annual vegetable fields, and perennial crops to the wash-pack area—to demonstrate the produce's journey from seed to table.

The visit was an interactive one for the chefs, who purchase and prepare the organic produce for St. Luke's kitchens. "Luckily we were planting potatoes during their visit," Lisa says, "so a few chefs opted to ride the potato planter and help plant our last row of potatoes!" They also had an opportunity to harvest asparagus and chives and taste-test the carrots that had overwintered in the field.

"Having open communication with the chefs and being able to respond to their needs is the foundation of our farm," Lisa says. "We value any opportunity where we can work with the chefs directly, hear about their needs, and think creatively about how we can match what we grow to meet those needs."

🥒Grower's Picks, Part Two🥒

Last week, we checked in with grower John Long to highlight several herbs on tap for Spring Organic Market and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 9. And now, he's back to shine a light on several vegetable varieties you may want to feature in your garden this season.

"Bearing crops are the backbone of the summer vegetable garden," he says. "At the sale, we will have all the favorites—beefsteak tomatoes, Italian teardrop eggplant, and standard pickling cucumbers. But in addition to those, why not try something a little different?"

🍅Tomato: "For your summer tomato crop, try something off the beaten path, like my personal favorite, Tasmanian Chocolate. It gives a different look—a luxurious mahogany—with great heirloom flavor and ease of cultivation. You might also try the sweet tidbits that are Pink Champagne grape tomato."

🍆Eggplant: "A relative of the tomato, eggplant is used in many different cuisines," John notes. "Most of us are familiar with the Italian varieties, but why not try one of the Asian varieties, which offers a delicate alternative in taste and texture."

🥒Cucumber: "Beyond the slicers and picklers, the Asian varieties offer different looks and flavors. We have Suyo Long, which produces a long, winding fruit, perfect for pickling and eating fresh," he says.

Please stay tuned for Part Three, the final installment in our annual Grower's Picks series, when John will showcase ornamental and perennial plants!

Consumer Education workshop season kicks off on Saturday, April 25 at our Founders Farm in !

This series will run the gamut of farming and homesteading topics, but our first workshop will focus on backyard composting. Hosted by Farm Innovations and Sales Specialist Jesse Barrett, it's sure to be one of the most popular classes of the season.

In this workshop, Jesse will teach attendees how to turn everyday food scraps—think vegetables and fruits, coffee grounds, eggshells, even tea bags—and yard waste into a nutrient-rich amendment for your growing space. Attendees will leave with the know-how and confidence to start a small backyard composting operation and find joy in the art of do-it-yourself!

With our work focused on healing the planet, every day is Earth Day . But on April 22, we invite you to our farm to celebrate this globally recognized day of service alongside staff and members of the greater community.

Join us from 10am-2pm that day as we clear debris from fields, garden beds, pollinator habitats, and landscape areas. This work represents an essential effort to prepare the land for spring planting and to beautify the grounds for tours goers and other guests to enjoy all season long.

Refreshments will be available for all volunteers who attend! Please visit the link below to learn more about this event and to register.

🌿Grower's Picks, Part One🌿

With Spring Organic Market and Plant Sale now only a month away (Saturday, May 9), it's time to start planning your 2026 garden. And John Long, Greenhouse and Landscape Specialist, is here to offer you a peek into some of the seedlings he's started in hopes of inspiring you to think outside the box this growing season!

When it comes to herbs, John says, why not try growing on a theme—perhaps creating a bed of herbs for tea preparation, as well as to add beauty and diversity?

🌿Catmint: "Often confused with catnip," John says, "catmint is a much more showy plant with blue flowers and makes a nice tea."

🌿Hyssop: "If you want to go beyond chamomile and mint, there are lots of other herbs used for teas that we'll have at the sale, such as hyssop. Beyond being used for tea, it's a beautiful ornamental—2- to 3-feet tall with purple flowers—and a pollinator favorite."

🌿Lemon Balm: "A popular garden herb that also makes a lovely lemon-scented tea, many gardeners also appreciate it as a glossy-leaved addition to a perennial border," he says.

Stay tuned for Part Two in the Grower's Picks series in which John will highlight some of his favorite ornamental and perennial plants!

If you live in certain parts of Pennsylvania, you know we need the rain. But storms that bring fierce winds and destruction are never welcome.

Last week’s tempest uprooted multiple old, majestic trees Founders Farm in , an area that took quite a beating and saw road closures and power outages. And this week, our Farm Innovations team (shout out to Will Christie, Brandon Wehr, Ian Philip, and Ian Frederick) got to work cleaning up all the debris scattered about the property. It was sad work—some of those downed trees were ancient, and truly beloved—but necessary work.

In brighter news, we hope to use some of the wood in future projects and give it another life for the next hundred years.

Swipe to see photos of the team’s efforts!
