This remarkable photograph shows floodwaters covering Market Street in Kittanning on March 26, 1913.

After several days of heavy rain, the Allegheny River reached approximately 30.7 feet which was the highest flood level ever recorded in Kittanning. Much of the downtown business district was inundated, forcing many stores to close.

Look closely at Gruskin’s Model Store on the left and its large projecting storefront sign. That original sign has survived for more than a century and is now displayed inside a local retail shop on Market Street!
