His colorful figurative paintings were both conservative and iconoclastic, defying the dominant abstract schools of the mid-20th century.

Meet the Artist: Matt Swanson

Printmaker. Painter. Illustrator. Model maker. Monster enthusiast.

Matt Swanson is a Pacific Northwest artist whose work draws inspiration from nature, animals, heavy music, and the kinds of giant nerdy monsters many of us never quite outgrow.
Before joining Kirkland Arts Center, Matt spent more than 14 years working in the video game industry. His work has received BAFTA and Peabody Awards and can be found in the permanent collections of both the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

But what we love most about Matt is his passion for sharing creative processes with others.

In his upcoming Relief Printing Workshop, students will learn how to transform a simple image into a hand-carved printing block and create their own original prints. Whether you're curious about printmaking, interested in making your own cards or fabric designs, or simply looking for a creative experience with an accomplished artist, this workshop is designed to be approachable, hands-on, and fun.

No experience necessary. All supplies provided.
