When designing a space like the one pictured, make the selections of what has the fewest options first. For example:
1. The natural hickory handscraped hardwood floor was probably already chosen for the main level of the house.
2. The cabinets are chosen next. The homeowner wanted a light and bright kitchen. The stained wood range hood draws the natural wood floor.
3. The appliance is being a big part of the budget were next. Notice the brushed gold trim draws the color of the hickory floor.
4. The white marble countertops were carefully chosen to match the white of the cabinets. The soft gray vein pulls in the stainless steel appliance.
5. The lighting is very important in this kitchen. Notice how different the cabinets look from the back left versus the near right of the picture.
6. The painted brick backsplash may have been the next selection. I like the contrast in texture use of raw materials: natural wood, clay brick, and iron grates and pulls.
7. The paint color should be the last selection to make. Paint has an infinite amount of options as it can be mixed to any color under the sun. Make sure it looks right with all previous selections.
